Article Review and Analysis 1

Article Selection

Find an article (no older than 1 year) on the Internet, which adheres to the following requirements. First, the article must discuss the state of unemployment or inflation in the United States or another country. Second, the article must involve a current event, which is normally not a problem if the article was published within the last year and is from a good source. Third, the author must use statistical information, data, or graphs to back his or her conclusions on the state of unemployment or inflation issue.

Fourth, the article must come from an appropriate source. Appropriate sources include The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, the New York Times, Business Week, CNBC, Market Watch, and some other sources. Be careful when selecting your article. Do not select an article from a source such as Investopedia.com, The Balance, economicshelp.org, or similar sources. I am not saying that these are not good sources for general educational information on the economy, but that certain sources are not appropriate for this assignment because of the above three requirements. Please do not email me with inquiries that request that I select or verify an article for you. Doing the research is part of the assignment. Make sure you provide the article citation.

If you want to choose an even more impressive source, consider using an academic article. Academic articles are written by professors and will be longer and have complicated data and statistical analyses, much of which will likely be a bit difficult to grasp. However, the findings and background of the academic article will still be explained and understandable. If you want to consider an academic article, you can use one of Mids online databases. Click here and select JSTOR, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, or Wilson Web. If you do use an academic article from one of these databases, the article can be a little older. Lets say it should be no more than three years old. Please do not assume that you must use a more complicated academic article, but I raise this possibility because in previous terms about 10% of student papers had already been using academic articles before I even mentioned the possibility in these instructions.

Fifth, to ensure that students provide their own ANALYSIS, as the title to the assignment indicates, when you draft one or more paragraphs to respond to questions 1-4 below, you should be brief and answer questions 1-4 in no more than 1/2 to 2/3 of a page (single-spaced) or about one double-spaced page. So, you should be summarizing this part of the paper in your own words. Question 5 below requires you to refer to the terms, methods, and ideas you have learned in the class and think about how they apply to your article. Provide a substantial opinion and critique the article. Responding to question 5 should be more than 1/2 page (single-spaced) or more than one double-spaced page.

Content of Your Paper:

Clearly identifies the essential topic, and the implicit aspects of the article, and understands integral relationships among information provided.
Excellent and accurate statement of author’s position, including by overtly addressing the entire scope of the author’s position and/or noticing subtleties.
Excellent articulation and understanding and statement of the data and/or statistics and clearly understands the relevance of that data or statistics to author’s opinion or the issue.
Excellent opinion on the article issue, such as by developing a strong analytical and original opinion, and/or by applying and analyzing lessons learned in class in the context of the article
