Paraphrasing is one of the most important and useful communicat
ion skills you can learn.
Paraphrasing enhances your understanding of the other person’s messages, and, at the same time, encourages that person to verbalize and clarify their own thoughts and views.
Paraphrasing helps to ensure you have understood the other person, which in turn helps you to figure out how to respond and lead the conversation forward.
Paraphrasing also helps to ensure that the other person feels heard and listened to, which can help to build trust and understanding.
Please re-read the section on paraphrasing in LOOK (pages 187-189 of LOOK 3rd edition; pages 198-200 of LOOK 4th edition). While paraphrasing comes intuitively to some people, it’s challenging for others. Paraphrasing essentially involves listening and then responding, reflecting only what you have heard the other person say but in your own words.
To practice the art of paraphrasing, please find a partner (either a classmate or a friend or family member) and complete the “Paraphrasing Practice” skill builder exercise (page 189 of LOOK 3rd edition; page 200 of LOOK 4th edition).
You may discuss the questions (Step 7) with your partner, but please also write your own, unique responses to the questions for the discussion forum. You and your partner will respond to the questions differently, as you have each had your own unique experience.
