The Spanish arrived in the 15th-16th century, and with numbers hovering around 100-300 (each ship could carry 35-50 men and supplies) killed off and or conquered the 200,000 upwards of 700,000 (Note: the range is wide depending upon sources) Aztec soldiers. They then began a genocide of the Aztec (and others), even though with smaller numbers, using soldiers (Spanish) who had been taken from bars and prisons, with no education and living in poverty (unable to own or buy any metals for armor) were given 1 musket and a blade. The officers of the Spanish forces were probably educated – at least until about 3rd grade, a few further than that. Most officers came from a higher class and many were despised by the rank and file soldiers they commanded.

The Spanish brought massive cannons that were not easily moved or maneuverable, but with the 12-20 or so canon and the couple thousand men by that time, they conquered the Aztec people.
