Question 1: Suppose that you met someone who argued that the most important function of language is to refer to things in the world. Based on what you have learned this term, how would you respond to this referentialist language ideology? What else does language do in the social world?
Draw on at least 2 course readings (including the film, if you choose) and craft an argument that uses course concepts to illustrate how language does far more than “refer to things.” Support your position with evidence from course materials.
Question 2: Does language merely describe our world, or create it? In this course, we have explored language practices as an index of group identity, a means of socialization, discrimination and social inequality, as well as a digitally-mediated terrain that is transforming how we see ourselves and society.
Draw on at least 2 sources in the course and craft an argument that explains how linguistic practice is transforming our world. In your view, what are some of the most significant social transformations taking place? Support your position with evidence from course materials.
