Types of Coaching and Self-Reflection in Leadership

Q1 (lawson)

Here are some thoughts to consider as your respond to DBs #4 & #5: Contemplate whether you are a transactional coach (using players to meet your needs or wants), a performance coach focusing on the physical aspects of your sport that lead to positive competitive outcomes, a developmental coach committed to the development of their athletes, a relational coach, or a transformational coach utilizing the “power of the whistle” to positively change the arc of every player’s life…..Explore and contemplate why you coach. For example here is Joe Ehrmann’s transformational coaching purpose: “I coach to help boys become men of empathy and integrity who will lead, be responsible, and change the world for good.”  Also, begin to think about and examine why you coach the way you do. Are you coaching to transform lives or merely repeating how you were coached? Be open to feedback from your loved ones, fellow coaches, and players regarding how helpful/not helpful your behavior is.

Put yourself in your players’ shoes. With all the social and emotional developmental needs of young people and the peer pressure, performance pressure, and parental pressures on young people – start to reflect on what it feels like to have you as their coach? Is your coaching is worth imitating? Do players come to practice and hang on to your every word? Watch how you talk to them, their teammates, and other coaches. Remember, there is a good chance that when they become parents and take their children on a sports field, they will coach them the way you coached them.

DB#4:

This question has two parts:

  • Part A: In Chapters 1 and 2 of InSideOut Coaching, Joe Ehrmann describes a classic transactional coach (his college football coach at Syracuse, Ben Schwarzwalder). And in Todd Gongwer’s video, Todd describes a transactional coach he encountered while serving as a consultant for a Power 5 football program. Please share an experience you’ve had or observed with a transactional coach and describe his or her impact on you and other teammates or athletes.
  • Part B: In the Perspectives on Leadership Video, five types of coaching/leadership and five styles of coaching/leadership are described. After reflecting on these, share a self-assessment of what type and style of coach you currently are. If you aspire to a level (type) of coaching that is different from your present self-evaluation, please share what type of coach you would ultimately like to become.

Q2

DB#5:

This question has three parts about the Jeff Duke, Todd Gongwer, and Nick Saban videos that you will respond to:

  • Part A: Identify and briefly describe the three dimensions of coaching that Jeff Duke identifies at the beginning of his video.
  • Part B: In his video, Jeff Duke describes several cultural shifts that make coaching more difficult today. Which of these cultural shifts that he describes do you think are the most difficult for coaches to deal with and why?
  • Part C: Jeff Duke, Todd Gongwer, and Coach Saban all make a strong case for the need for transformational coaching today. What persuasive insights do you think Todd Gongwer shared about the importance of striving to become a transformational coach? What insights did Coach Saban share that provided some insight into the perils of transactional coaching compared to the rewards of transformational leadership?

Q3. DB#6

In this week’s video, UCLA Coach Cori Close shares many insightful and inspirational nuggets of wisdom. List five (5) important points or insights you took from her presentation and explain why in each case, if applied, they would improve your coaching leadership and effectiveness. In one of the five (5) insights you share, please address the issue of learning to “coach with intensity without anger.” (For many coaches, a great challenge is to learn to balance upholding high standards without erupting in anger; something discussed specifically by UCLA Coach Cori Close in her video).

Q4

DB#7

In Chapter 3, Joe Ehrmann discusses a study that identified three basic needs of young people (1- Someone to believe in them and to affirm their inherent value and potential, 2-a belief system to help them find meaning and purpose, and 3-a place to belong). Do you agree with the findings of this study that these three things are critical for young peoples’ welfare? Would you add any more critical needs to the list? Which need, in your experience, is the greatest that young people have, and how do you/how would you attempt to meet this need?

Q5

DB #8

In Chapter 5, Joe Ehrmann poses four key questions that every coach would be wise to reflect on. Please respond from your own personal perspective to each of these four questions.

  1. Why do I coach?
  2. Why do I coach the way I do?
  3. What does it feel like to be coached by me?
  4. How do I define success?

Q6

You need to have a good comprehension of Types of Practices utiliized in effective Motor Learning strategies that were presented in the textbook.

Part One:

Pick two skills from the sport that you coach or the sport you would like to coach.  Of those two skills, one should be a “closed” skill and the other one an “open” skill.  If you do not know the difference between the two, look it up on the internet.  For each skill, please discuss how you would teach the skills using the following: Whole vs. Part Practice, Blocked vs. Random practice, Constant vs Variable conditions.

Part Two:

Then provide your short analysis, again based on your understanding of what the textbook explained, on what you think would work best with beginners and advanced athletes using the methods discussed above and why.

Part Three:

How will you apply this information to your sport?

Q7 (gibbs)

Please note that this is a threaded discussion, allowing you to have an extended conversation with a smaller group. Your instructor will set up four groups. Read the rest of the instructions below and post accordingly. Do not start your own thread. If there are already more than five students in a group, consider selecting a different group to keep the conversations lively.

Read the article “POV: Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Writing at the University: Let’s Embrace It.” [webpage] and then decide how you want to respond to it. Choose one of the following ways.

  • Skeptic, challenging the author
  • Reflector, thinking about how the reading applies to you and others
  • Validator, supporting the author
  • Extender, applying the author’s principles to future situations

Descriptions of these roles are found below. Once you have decided, make your initial post under the appropriate thread (Skeptic, Reflector, Validator, or Extender).

Skeptic – Challenge some items in the reading. Be specific about what you disagree with and provide substantive evidence (logic, examples, or even research). Here is a way to start your post: “I disagree with many points in the article because…”

Reflector – Think about the concepts set forth in the reading as they relate to your own experiences or those of others. Be specific about your observations, explaining how you have reached your conclusions. Here is a way to start your post: “Reading this article makes me think of a class I took last year…”

Validator – Support some items in the reading. Be specific about which points you agree with, explaining why you do. Provide evidence. Here is a way to start your post: “I agree with many of the author’s points, such as…”

Extender – Show how the concepts might be applied in future situations. You may focus on both positive and negative ramifications. Be specific as you extend the conversation. Here is a way to start your post: “This article made me wonder how the concepts might be applied to…”

Please remember that the university’s AI policy is to avoid using AI-generated content unless specifically advised to do so in the discussion or assignment instructions. So putting AI-generated content in this discussion would be contrary to that policy.

Responding to Others:

  • Ask for clarification about why the student chose their role.
  • Provide additional evidence for that role or another one.
  • Try using another of these roles (skeptic, reflector, validator, or extender) in your responses.
