BUS606 Business Research Proposal and Literature Review

Answers:

Introduction:

The paper mainly talks about the leadership and management of sustainable business operations. The role of the government in aiding or negating these operations are also discussed.  Government interventions have a strong impact on the sustainability of the government in the long run. Following the definition of sustainability by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), Sustainable Operations Management (SOM) is defined as the set of skills and concepts that allow a company to structure and manage its business processes in order to obtain competitive returns on its capital assets .

This research proposal aims to find the different ways in which an organization can become more sustainable with time. In fact, sustainability based approaches demand operations management boundaries’ expansion, creation and integration of new performance goals into traditional company’s performance management system, and new criteria and policies for operations’ decision areas development. Thus, introducing a sustainability based approach in an already established organization is a difficult feat, but once introduced, the same will help the organization grow and develop even further. This research proposal aims to find out the different issues that an organization might face while introducing this new approach.

Justification of the research:

Introducing a variety of different approaches to increase and improve upon the sustainability of business organizations is a necessity at this point. And this has developed due to a few different reasons. First and foremost, it should be noted that the human society has been changing and transforming over the last decade. Now, the society has become more diverse and inclusive. Introducing diversity in the work place is one approach to improving the sustainability of the same. This research study will have a significant importance in its field as it will help the management of a business understand the method of increasing the sustainability of their business without disrupting their own business operations.

In addition to driving social and environmental change, sustainability initiatives can contribute to an organization’s overall success. While sustainability strategies might be an investment in the short term, they can lead to long-term benefits. A little work might be required to introduce the policies that will lead to the improvement of an organization’s sustainability, but once those methods are implemented, the company will grow and develop faster and both their productivity and profitability will increase.

Rudrajeet Pal and Jonathan Gander (2018) conducted a research to examine the models of sustainable business within the fashion industry. The authors claimed that the enterprises of worldwide fashion industry generate high negative consequences for the environment. The planet is affected by the high usage of water, pollution from treatments of chemical in preparation and dyeing and the disposal of huge amounts of stocks that are unused through burning and junkyard deposits. The paper utilizes the concept of sustainable dialectics of slowing down, narrowing and shutting down the chain of resources that are utilized during the undertaking of production, designing, assembling and distributing the fashion garments to examine the models of business that helps to decrease the environmental consequences of the fashion network.

The researchers try to consider the ecological value and obtain some propositions that can test whether sustainable business model can successfully replace the presiding and unsustainable business models. The research paper finally argues that absence of flexibility and incompatibility with the value proposals of customers of fashion industry along with the barriers to supply chain transformation discourage the presently structured sustainable business model to become the standard model of business industry.

The main aim of the paper is to analyze the function of sustainable business prototypes to support the technological experiments such as improvements of quantity and decentralized ways for quality of water in urban regions.

The results portrayed that the perception of risk, acceptance and confidence of the consumers in the decentralized ways can be upgraded with the help of business prototypes. The close connection among the consumers can contribute to the betterment of the system. However, researches can also be done the contribution of various models of business to support water technologies in urban regions and boost its acceptability in the society.

Kumar et al. (2018) to understand the effects of Covid-19 on the sustainable presentation and administration of operations. Covid-19 pandemic has hampered the worldwide production and its corresponding supply chain. Many policymakers and the industrial managers are looking for appropriate policies and strategies to recover the patterns of production and meet the demand of the consumers. The paper has examined the sustainable production and pattern of consumption in the post-Covid-19 era. Most of the biggest economies around the world has imposed lockdowns due to which the emphasis was shifted to the demand of the essential commodities and services. The paper has discussed the challenges of production and management of operations in the situations of pandemic. Businesses around the world have faced multiple challenges during the worldwide pandemic. The SMEs are transforming their prototypes of business to adjust themselves to the changing condition of the environment. The understandings regarding the SMEs are examined according to the effects on the reformulation of sustainable prototypes of business in the SMEs. A study was conducted in the year 2016 that studies the development of sustainable business with the help of leadership skill in the SMEs. The research uses the method of examination of literature and direct survey. The study resulted in the conclusion that leadership is the most important skill to enable business sustainability. There is a significant statistical relationship between conviction or awareness of a manager regarding the development of sustainable business and taking necessary action to create an environment of sustainable business in the company. Managers take some actions required for the development of the employees. They are also focused to generating connections with the external stakeholders (Szczepanska-Woszczyna &Kurowska-Pysz, 2016).

Kurucz et al. (2017) in their research tried to understand the vitality of associative leadership to attain strategic sustainability. The contribution of the paper also focuses on the origin of leadership for the perception of entrepreneurs, experts and researchers. It is clear that leadership is a complicated phenomenon and concept that must be studied in a multi-angle and multidimensional perspective.

Management of sustainability has become an important topic for some major companies of the world. The study tries to understand the ways in which business can make a contribution to address the challenges of sustainability that individuals are facing in the modern world and to understand when can a business be considered as sustainable. In the present days, more businesses claim that they can manage their business sustainably. In such times, it is required that there should be a distinction between the companies that effectively manage their business effectively to contribute to sustainability and those business who do not manage their business effectively. The study tries to create a typology of sustainability. The typology covers Business Sustainability 1.0, Business Sustainability 2.0 and Business Sustainability 3.0

Scheepers and Bogie (2020) conducted a study to understand the contextual leadership for innovation for creation of sustainable business during the time of Covid-19. On 15th May in 2020, the general manager of Uber Africa was in a dilemma to change their business function in regards to the demands during Covid-19 without bringing changes in their important business prototype as a multisided platform of technology. They are asking the riders to stay at home to maintain the law of social distancing. The question arises on how would they care for the employees when they discourage riders to avoid using Uber. During this time, the company has taken initiatives to generate extra streams of revenue for the drivers. The study aimed to understand the vitality of location in terms of the ability of leadership to strategically adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Impact of intervention of government on sustainable operations in business

Sussking and Vines (2020) conducted a study on the economics of the world during Covid-19. According to the researchers, the role of policymakers is important to bring about urgent interventions. The articles have examined new interventions by the government based on their use by suggesting new ways for their improvement and to show that the global challenges faced by the businesses and the economy is important to deal with effectively.

Mahmoudi and Rasti-Barzoki (2017) conducted a study to understand the effects of government intervention on sustainable business and supply chain. Emissions of greenhouse gas and global warming are two important issues in the modern world. The governments of different countries plays an important role to manage the crisis. They can create an impact on the businesses that are polluting the environment by imposing suitable policies and incentives. The policies can also create an impact on the production activities of the business. On the other hand, imposing strict policies can cause considerable decrease in the profits of the producers of a business and can sometimes lead to shutdown of the business.

The paper forms a link between the objectives of the government and the targets of the producers with the help of the approach of two-population evolution game theory. Using this procedure, the accomplishment of the members of supply chains under various scenarios of government is modelled. Lastly, the suggested model is applied to the industry of Indian Textile. The study shows that the policies of governments have some consequences on the activity of producers, emissions and rivalrous market. However, tariffs are the most fruitful policy to reduce environmental effects (Mahmoudi & Rasti-Barzoki, 2018).

Mohammadreza Sinayi and Morteza Rasti-Barzoki studied about greening, pricing and policies of social welfare in the supply chain with reference to intervention of the government. It is important that all business should focus on sustainability if they want to stay rivalrous and survive. The paper takes into account a tow-tier model that is composed of government and supply chain. The paper has modelled three important dimensions of sustainability. The paper compares the social welfare, greening and pricing with and without interventions of government. Consumer Surplus is modelled on two variables. The repercussions of various policies by the government on the profits of business and environment is analyzed by generating a contract to link decentralized business and supply chains (Sinayi & Rasti-Barzoki, 2018).

Ahlstrom (2019) has in her study claimed that rethinking about the role of economic actors and the governance of regulatory system is required to ensure that their sustainable development. The study has analyzed the laws of monetary market and business by the European Union in relation to sustainability. The study has identified “policy hotspots” with the potential of advancement of commitment of European Union to the sustainable development. The action of EU has dependency in path that is generated by two important approaches of policy as informed by the law of monetary market and businesses. The corporate monetization process in the policy-making of European Union limits the ability of EU to generate sustainable legislation.

Sustainable Development Goal is an important intervention by the government to help business attain sustainability. Keeping this fact in mind, Hiam Serhan and Yannou-Lebris (2019), claimed that students need to learn about eco-designed business models to learn about sustainable development goals in agro-industrial food system. They can develop entrepreneurial skills to establish green businesses to industrialize their innovation

The purpose of a study done by Raut et al. (2019) and his colleagues was to examine the predictors of performance of sustainable business with the help of big data analytics in developing nations. Data required for this study was collected from the industrial firms that have incorporated sustainable business practices.
