FIN 403-O1 (CORPORATE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT) Spring 2022 SYLLABUS Page 1 of 9

You must have a financial calculator that includes NPV and IRR features to get through the course. Many of the exam problems involve complex financial calculations – a financial calculator is necessary to solve them. I strongly recommend that you buy Texas Instruments: BA-II PLUS. This is about the cheapest financial calculator in the market.

PRESENT VALUE TABLES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED FOR CALCULATIONS IN THE CLASS.

BLACKBOARD COMPANION WEBSITE:

The direct Blackboard web-site address to the course is as follows:

https://texsu.blackboard.com/

The students need to go to the site and log in to obtain all the course materials posted there. The site will be updated with new materials as frequently as it is necessary. The students need to log on to the site on a regular basis.

BLACK BOARD ACCESS PROCEDURE:

• TSU STUDENTS: The TSU Blackboard system has been successfully integrated with Banner. The site is the same, but the login names and passwords have changed.

• TSU Bb course site: http://texsu.blackboard.com

• All users will be logging in with the following:
o login: last name + first initial + middle initial + last 4 # of the T-number

o password: Banner Pin number (which is the web for student’s login) – this is typically a user’s birthday (mm/dd/yy)
o If the user does not have a middle initial listed in the system, login with the last name + first initial +last 4

#’s of the T-number.
o For example,
login: smithfm1234 OR smithf1234
password: 032671

• If you are not able to log into Blackboard, you may not be listed in the Banner/Web for the Student system. Make sure your registration information is properly posted with the Registrar. The Banner system generates Bb users and controls Bb passwords and e-mail address changes.

• If you have successfully logged into Bb, you should see your courses listed on the Bb page.

• If a course taken by you is not listed in Bb, make sure that your instructor has made the course available in the Black Board. When any change has been made in Banner, it will appear in Blackboard

For Blackboard troubleshooting call TSU Online at (713) 313-4357

CLASS DISCUSSION TIME:

Classroom discussion will be devoted to highlighting important materials, demonstrating problem-solving techniques, and discussing other environmental dynamics in the U.S. financial system. A portion of that time will also be used to discuss questions and/or problems if they are of interest to majority of the students. It is assumed that you have read the assigned materials carefully BEFORE your participation in the discussion.

ONLINE EXAMS:

There are a total of five exams throughout the semester. Students would be taking the exams on Black Board. All the exams will take place at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Each student would be responsible to have access to a Black Board capable computer during the exam time. The Computer Labs in JHJ School of Business have availability of the computers that can be utilized for the exams.

GROUP PROJECT & PRESENTATION:

Each group is required to turn in a project and make a group presentation. I expect every group member to be present to participate in all group meetings. If a group member is not present and therefore does not contribute to the group project, the member should identify that member to the instructor. There is a penalty for non-participation in the group project. A

FIN 403-O1 (CORPORATE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT) Spring 2022 SYLLABUS Page 2 of 9

group member who does not participate in a group meeting/assignment will not be awarded a group score. The score for such non-participating group member will be significantly LOWER than the group score. It could be zero. Each case will be decided by the instructor.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

Each student is required to turn in a homework assignment via MyLab Finance for each chapter covered. There is NO make-up homework under any circumstances if the student fails to complete the homework by 11:59 PM on Sunday.

LOCKDOWN BROWSER BASED ONLINE EXAMS

Notes: LockDown Browser DOES NOT work on Google Chromebook. It only works on Windows and Apple Computers. This course requires the use of LockDown Browser and Monitor for online exams. Please use the following steps to download LockDown Browser and take the exam.

(1). Watch this short video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuX8WoeAycs] to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser.
(2). Download and install LockDown Browser from this link:

(3). To take an online exam, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You will receive a ZERO for the exam automatically if you bypass the lockdown browser.)

(4). Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

• Ensure you’re in a location where you won’t be interrupted
• Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.
• Clear your desk of all external materials — books, other computers, or devices
• Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test

• LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the exam until all questions are completed and submitted.

EVALUATION AND GRADING STANDARDS:

Your total course score consists of examinations, homework, project, and presentation. The approximate tentative grade distribution will be based upon the following schedule:

Activity Possible Points for Each Activity
Regular Exams 100 x 3 = 300 points
Mylab Finance Homework 250 points
Project 100 points
Presentation 50 points
Final Exam 100 points
Total Course Score 800 points

With the exception of a few important concepts that will be included in subsequent exams, all the regular exams are non-cumulative. Makeup exams are inherently unfair and a poor use of the instructor’s time. They are unfair because the student taking the makeup has advantages (timing, knowledge of the regular exam contents) over students taking the regular exam. Therefore, there is no make-up exam under any circumstances. There will be four regular exams and a Comprehensive Final Exam. All students have the option of dropping one of the first three exams but not exam 4. Students who miss an exam will have the missed exam count as their dropped exam (except exam 4). If a student misses more than one regular exam, the Comprehensive Final Exam will be counted twice towards his/her final grade.

STANDARD POLICIES:

1) Reporting a NAT (Not Attending) Student Policy

2) Any student who is not active in any form in the class during the first two weeks of the semester would be reported as a Not Attending Student (NAT) to the registrar’s office for removal from the class roster. Simply log into BLACKBOARD COLLABORATE ULTRA to attend our live class sessions on Tuesdays or otherwise would not be counted as a valid activity.

Review TSU Attendance policy (TSU Catalog) Class Attendance Regulations

Students who register for courses for a particular semester must attend their classes (PARTICIPATE) starting on the first day of class. Students who have not attended classes up to the 12th day of classes will be reported to the Registrar’s office for non-attendance. A student who is reported for non-attendance will be dropped from those classes which he or she has not attended. Students who have supporting documentation offering explanation for their absence(s) must present their documentation to the instructor who reported them for nonattendance. The instructor may evaluate their supporting documentation and hear their case. If the request for consideration is denied, the student will have to re-register for the course as early as the next semester the class is available. If the instructor approves the student for reinstatement, the instructor will submit a written request for the student’s reinstatement to the dean of the school or college. If the dean approves the request for reinstatement, he or she will submit a written request to the Registrar’s Office for the student’s reinstatement.

3) NO make-up exams/homework/project except those who miss the final exam due to documented emergencies. Any late homework or project submission will be graded zero.
a. Please make sure you have reliable computer, internet and skill to cope with this class.

b. There is NO opportunity for a MAKEUP exam if you fail to complete the exam (a) because you are logged out by lockdown browser due to activities not allowed, (b) because of computer breakdown (c) and/or other issues which are under your control.
c. You are signing up for this class because you agreed that you have ALL it takes to take an online class.

4) Students will have one week following an exam to review and to comment concerning grading.

5) Incomplete grades are not given in lieu of failing grades except under severe cases approved in advance of the final exam.

6) It is student’s responsibility to obtain all information from a missed class period. This includes any announced changes in exam dates, etc.

7) If a student requires accommodation for a disability (physical, learning, or otherwise), he/she should contact the Office for Disabled Student Services at 713-313-4210. The Texas Southern University (TSU) complies with non-discriminatory policies for students with disabilities under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the ADA Amendment Act of 2008, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504). These Acts mandate equal opportunities for qualified individuals with disabilities in higher education public facilities, programs, activities, and services. Under these federal guidelines the University is required to protect the civil rights of students with disabilities; maintain the student’s confidentiality and provide reasonable academic accommodations/auxiliary aids to students with documented disabilities. Any student who may need accommodations based on the impact of a disability should contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) at 713-313-4210. The ODS is located in the Student Health Center, room 140. Once the instructor receives a

FIN 403-O1 (CORPORATE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT) Spring 2022 SYLLABUS Page 4 of 9

letter from the Office outlining need-specific accommodations, fair procedures will be implemented that are targeted to the student’s learning requirement(s).

• TSU Link for Student Accessibility Services Office (SAS) http://students.tsu.edu/departments/disability-services/

8) The instructor reserves the right to CHANGE/MODIFY the syllabus during the semester if the situation calls for such action.

9) Academic Honesty Policy

Texas Southern University maintains the highest standard for academic honesty and trusts that each student will perform ethically and professionally when preparing required work for this course. Each assignment must represent the student’s original work, even for work designated as group work.

Although we encourage collaboration between students and faculty in the sharing of ideas and experiences, individual work needs to represent the student’s original thought and be distinguishably different from other students’ work. Academic dishonesty undermines the values of our University as well as the educational endeavor. Dishonesty and theft of any kind are not to be tolerated. The act of cheating in academic work is detrimental to the educational process and ultimately cheats both the student involved and the entire community of scholars. All instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the department chair and the dean of the School of Business. Please refer to the academic catalog for a more thorough review of the university’s academic dishonesty policy.

Scholastic Dishonesty (2019-2020 Catalog)

Students must maintain a high standard of honesty in their academic work. They should avoid all forms of academic dishonesty, especially the following:

• Plagiarism. The appropriation of passages, either word for word (or in substance) from the writing of another and the incorporation of these as one’s written work offered for credit.

• Collusion. Working with another person in the preparation of notes, themes, reports, or other written work is offered for credit unless such collaboration is specifically approved in advance by the instructor.

• Cheating on an Examination or Quiz. Giving or receiving, offering or soliciting information, or using prepared material in an examination or testing situation is expressly forbidden. On examinations and quizzes students are expected (a) to remain in the examination room until the examination is finished, (b) to refrain from talking, and (c) to refrain from bringing notes and books into the examination room.

• Impersonation. Allowing another person to attend classes, take examinations, or do graded assignments for an enrolled student under his or her name is strictly forbidden.

• A violator of any of the above offenses will incur severe disciplinary action ranging from suspension to expulsion from the
University. Specific guidelines will be administered by each dean.
