Create a scheme of work for your chosen year group that requires them to design and construct a model of a unique bridge, that must support a given mass.

Topic: Science and Technology in Education

TASK:

Create a scheme of work for your chosen year group that requires them to design and construct a model of a unique bridge, that must support a given mass. Choose your year group carefully, and ensure you include science, technology and mathematics relevant to that year group in your task.

Show your understanding of the 5Es approach by identifying which aspects you are addressing in each section of the scheme of work.

You can see someone else doing this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8mFuuyZC6A Of course, you aren’t going to just copy that: show your learning, creativity and understandings and how you would make it relevant to your students.

You are strongly encouraged to construct a model of a solution to the task you have set, and test one aspect of its strength, to ensure the task is realistic and achievable, and to check your instructions are clear and easy to follow. This also makes it much easier for you, when you do it in class, to help students with problems they encounter, and to anticipate other difficulties.

Your report will contain:

1. Identification of the year group you will teach, including curriculum statements from science, technology and maths, that will be covered (use words, not cryptic codes) (5%).

2. A risk assessment that includes identification of risks, assessment of risks, how to control them, what to do when they happen, and how to manage students (10%).

3. A clear description of what concepts you will teach and how you will teach them, including initial questioning, and justification throughout of which of the 5Es is being addressed by each section (20%).

4. An activity sheet that you would give the students, clearly explaining their task, which involves them designing and constructing a bridge to fit the parameters you set (such as materials, distance, weight it must support, etc) and incorporating appropriate science inquiry skills (20%).

5. A clear method of determining the quality of the bridge included on the activity sheet. This should be quantifiable, and presented as an appropriately scaffolded table and/or graph (15%).

6. Questions that allow the students to reflect on and consolidate their learning (20%).

7. Professional presentation: appropriate referencing and citations, spelling, grammar and punctuation. (10%)
