Objective: to employ relevant theories, empirical data, and academic readings (both included
and not included in the unit’s reading list) in order to complete an essay concerning what has
been taught in the second part of the semester
Choose one of the following topics:
1. All eyes on China? Utilise relevant theory and evidence to analyse the benefits
and risks of Australia’s engagement with China
2. Why are Australian-Indonesian relations problematic? What would be an
effective way to improve them while taking Australia’s national interests into
account?
3. What lies ahead for Australian foreign and security policy? Rely on relevant
theory and evidence to outline three of Australia’s most significant future
challenges
Guidelines
The word limit is 2,000 words; try not to write more as the exceeding content will not be
considered (careful, there’s no “leeway”!), and excessive amounts of extra words might
incur penalties
Employ both theory and empirical evidence. Also, use both insights from the unit’s
readings so far – when relevant – and new publications that are useful for your topic
Always cite your sources (the bibliography is not included in the word count). Harvard
citation style is the only accepted one (the university’s official guide:
https://library.sydney.edu.au/subjects/downloads/citation/Harvard_Complete.pdf)
Acceptable sources are primary (official statements, official datasets) and secondary
sources (journal articles, books, book chapters, policy/research papers). Tertiary
sources, news reports, blogs, and other non-academic sources are to be avoided (rare
use of news reports can be an exception, if other sources are not available). Lectures
and tutorials are not citable material. Tables, graphs, and pictures can be used, if cited
