For this essay, you will complete both a rough draft (due Thursday) and a final draft (due Monday), where you will explore the relationships between personal experiences and values.
Requirements
This essay is worth 200 points towards the 1000 points that will determine your course grade. A successful essay will
1: Clearly identify and define a personal value of importance to you.
2: Use specific details from your personal history, including stories, to explore how this value became important to you, and analyze how the value has evolved in your life.
3: Cite any sources you might use in APA style.
Be at least 1400-1750 words in length.
Be clear, effectively organized, carefully edited, and submitted by the due date.
Each of us finds a time when we respond strongly to a situation, or we feel strongly about something. Sometimes we have that response because we’ve given great thought to what is important to us. Other times, we respond without having given thought to what we value. It’s important, especially before we seek to persuade others of our views, to fully consider what we value.
For Christians, such consideration—what we truly value and why; how our actions and speech communicate what we truly value—is important, especially in light of Scripture such as Matthew 12:36 (“Everyone will have to give account of the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken”) and I Peter 3:15 (“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have, but do this with gentleness and respect”).
The purpose of this essay is to inform your audience about a value that you have given thought to and that is important to you, establishes your personal definition of the value, and demonstrates an intricate understanding of how your personal history or experiences have contributed to its creation and evolution.
Preparing to Write
Think about why you believe what you believe. What values underlie those beliefs, and where do these values come from? How is this value enacted in your life, your actions, your speech? Throughout this session, and especially in this essay, we will thoroughly investigate values and the role they play in both individual and social action.
To begin that investigation, you will choose a particular value that is important to you. The goal of this project is to think and write about your value in a critical way. To do this, you should consider how your personal beliefs and past experiences inform the value you have chosen. In other words, you will identify, analyze, and communicate how your personal experiences have shaped your values, and vice versa, making you the person you are today.
