Benchmark – Application of Clinical Decision-Making Tools

The purpose of this assignment is to examine how clinical decision support systems (CDSS) can address disparities in health care. You will develop a presentation outlining task force goals and relevant information for implementing a CDSS system of your choice, to improve access to quality care for all patients.
In your role as a nurse informaticist, you have been asked by the chief informatics officer (CIO) to evaluate a clinical decision-making tool to be used by your organization’s stakeholders. The selected CDSS will be used to address the current state of access to quality care and information literacy in your organization.
Part 1: Presentation for the Task Force
You will need to create a presentation for the initial meeting of the task force you will lead for this initiative. Prepare a 10-12-slide PowerPoint presentation for the first task force meeting to include these agenda items:
Introduction:
- State the meeting objectives clearly.
Reason for the Project:
- Explain the organizational need, reason for the project, rationale for implementing a clinical decision-making tool in your organization.
- Discuss how CDSS can improve access to quality care and information literacy in your organization.
Task Force Selection:
- Explain why you have been selected to lead this project and the various roles represented in the group.
- Explain the role of each stakeholder and why they were selected to serve on this task force.
Identify CDSS to Be Implemented:
- Conduct research and identify one popular CDSS system used in the health care industry, include a description of the CDSS system.
- Discuss how this system addresses access to quality care and information literacy within the organization.
Crucial Functionality:
- Explain the crucial functions of the selected CDSS including why it is essential to the clinical workflow.
- Explain the impact of the CDSS on health information exchange, interoperability, and integration of health care.
Information Communication Technology (ICT):
- Review the information and communication technologies (in the electronic health record, mobile health, and telehealth systems).
- Select one communication technology and discuss how a CDSS can be incorporated to improve quality of care.
- Describe how communication technologies support documentation of care and communication among providers and patients at all system levels.
Task Force Communication:
- Discuss how communication technology will be used to communicate with the task force members during the project. Include what tools will be used (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Email, Meetings, Shared Folders).
Next Steps:
- Discuss the next steps of the task force. Do they need to review content on CDSS chosen? Project plan?
Presentation Format Requirements:
- The title slide and reference slide are not included in the slide count.
- Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Expand upon the information included in the slide and do not simply restate it. Please ensure the speaker notes include a minimum of 50-75 words.
- You are required to cite a minimum of three sources within the presentation to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years, appropriate for the assignment criteria, and relevant to nursing practice.
- While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center
- Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.
Part 2: Video Recording
For Part 2 of this assignment, create a video resource for the task force. Using the presentation created in Part 1, record a 3-5-minute video of your presentation. Include the link to your video in the speaker notes on your title/introductory slide.
You will be assessed on the following:
- Content knowledge.
- Presentation skills, including body language, eye contact, evidence of preparation, clear articulation, and adherence to the 5-minute time limit.
Record your video using a free GCU-approved tool of your choice, such as Loom, Zoom, or PowerPoint. For additional support creating video presentations, refer to “Course Material Support,” located in the Topic 4 Resources. A resource on using Loom to record a video presentation is listed in the Course Resources as well.
How to Complete the Application of Clinical Decision-Making Tools Presentation Assignment (Addressing Health Care Disparities) — A Step-by-Step Guide for Busy Nursing Students
If you’re a working nursing student, this assignment can feel overwhelming fast.
You’re not just writing a paper.
You’re being asked to think like a nurse informaticist, design a task force presentation, justify a clinical decision support system (CDSS), and then record a professional video—all while meeting strict slide, speaker-note, citation, and timing requirements.
This guide shows you how to approach the assignment strategically—and where most students lose points.
Assignment Overview (Confirm You’re in the Right Place)
“The purpose of this assignment is to examine how clinical decision support systems (CDSS) can address disparities in health care…”
You must complete two connected parts:
Part 1: PowerPoint Presentation
-
10–12 content slides (excluding title & references)
-
Speaker notes under every slide (50–75 words minimum)
-
Minimum of 3 scholarly sources (≤5 years old)
-
Focus on CDSS, access to quality care, and information literacy
Part 2: Video Presentation
-
3–5 minute recorded presentation
-
Based on your PowerPoint
-
Link included in speaker notes
-
Clear delivery, preparation, and professionalism required
This is a high-stakes, multi-skill assignment—not just a content test.
Why Students Struggle With This Assignment
Students lose points because they:
-
Overload slides with text instead of using speaker notes
-
Fail to connect CDSS to health disparities
-
Choose a CDSS but don’t justify why it fits the organization
-
Write weak or repetitive speaker notes
-
Go over or under the 5-minute video limit
-
Forget to integrate ICTs meaningfully
-
Trigger LopesWrite similarity due to generic wording
This assignment rewards clarity, structure, and professional reasoning, not volume.
Step 1: Think “Executive Presentation,” Not Class Slides
You are presenting to a task force, not classmates.
Your tone should be:
-
Professional
-
Strategic
-
Evidence-based
-
Decision-oriented
You are role-playing a nurse informaticist reporting to leadership (CIO, stakeholders).
That mindset shift alone improves grades.
Step 2: Build the Slide Deck Before Writing Speaker Notes
Recommended Slide Flow (10–12 Slides)

Step 3: Speaker Notes Are Where Most Points Are Won—or Lost
Each slide must have 50–75+ words of speaker notes.
Strong speaker notes:
-
Expand the slide (do NOT repeat bullet points)
-
Explain why decisions were made
-
Tie technology to health equity and access
-
Sound natural for a 3–5 minute delivery
Weak speaker notes:
-
Restate slide text
-
Sound robotic or generic
-
Lack evidence or rationale
Think of speaker notes as a mini script.
Step 4: Choosing a CDSS (Don’t Overthink It)
Choose a well-known CDSS used in real health systems.
Your evaluator is NOT grading your product choice—they’re grading your justification.
Focus on:
-
How it supports evidence-based care
-
How it reduces disparities
-
How it improves access and literacy
-
How it integrates with ICTs
Step 5: ICT Integration Must Be Practical
When discussing ICTs:
-
Reference EHRs, mobile health, or telehealth
-
Select one communication technology
-
Explain clearly how CDSS enhances quality and coordination
Avoid vague statements like:
“Technology improves care.”
Instead explain how, where, and why.
Step 6: Video Presentation — Keep It Simple and Professional
Your video should:
-
Stay between 3–5 minutes
-
Follow slide order
-
Use clear speech and calm pacing
-
Show preparation (no reading directly)
You may use tools like:
-
Loom
-
Zoom
-
PowerPoint recording
Include the video link in your title slide speaker notes, exactly as instructed.
Step 7: APA, Sources, and LopesWrite
Even though APA isn’t required for the body:
-
Citations are required
-
References must be APA-formatted
-
Sources must be ≤5 years old
-
Claims about CDSS and disparities must be supported
Because this topic uses common phrases:
-
Paraphrase carefully
-
Cite consistently
-
Avoid copy-paste definitions to pass LopesWrite
Reality Check: This Is a Time-Heavy Assignment
To do this well, you need time to:
-
Design slides
-
Research CDSS and disparities
-
Write speaker notes
-
Practice timing
-
Record and upload a video
-
Fix citation or originality issues
For students juggling full-time work, family, and clinical hours, this is often where stress peaks.
When Getting Help Is the Smart Choice
This assignment is especially challenging if you:
-
Are short on time
-
Struggle with presentations
-
Are unsure how to link CDSS to health disparities
-
Feel anxious about video recording
-
Have lost points on speaker notes before
-
Want to avoid revisions or resubmissions
Many nursing students seek help here not because they lack knowledge, but because this assignment combines content, technology, communication, and performance.
