. All four ethical principles hold great significance in the context of medical values. I would personally rank them in the order of importance as non-maleficence first, beneficence second, autonomy third, and justice fourth. I view doing no harm to the patient as most crucial, in addition to beneficence as it pertains to “all forms of action intended to benefit other persons. It requires that one prevents harm to others, provides benefits, and balances those benefits against risks and costs” (Hoehner, 2020). Autonomy, while necessary, has boundaries when the patient is mentally incapacitated and is objectively unable to make rational decisions. In these cases, autonomy can be situationally removed, all while keeping non-maleficence and beneficence in mind. Lastly, justice pertains to treating all patients with equal care, and providing the best care we can give despite personal biases or disagreement with the patient’s actions. Every patient has the right to their own decisions- as evidenced in the principle of autonomy, and the quality of care provided should be consistent regardless. In the context of the Christian biblical narrative, I believe they would be ordered with Justice being first, autonomy second, non-maleficence third, followed by beneficence last. I ordered these while asking myself what God would hold as most to least important in his treatment of mankind. Justice would be first, as He provides us all an equal opportunity at redemption regardless of our actions or views. Autonomy second, as we are all given the choice whether to believe and follow Christian practices or reject them. While important, non-maleficence and beneficence would be ranked lower due to the fact that justice and autonomy are prominent concepts in the worldview of Christianity.

The four principles of medical ethics includes respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice (Hoehner, 2020). The principle of respect for autonomy requires respect for the decisions made by autonomous persons (Hoehner, 2020). Beneficence requires that one prevents harm to others, provides benefits, and balances those benefits against risks and costs (Hoehner, 2020). Nonmaleficence requires one not to cause harm to another (Hoehner, 2020). Justice requires the fair distribution of benefits, risks, and costs to a general population (Hoehner, 2020). Although all four principles are very important, I feel some are more important than others. My ranking for the four principles would be, from first to last, autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and justice. The ethical principle of autonomy, was affirmed in a court decision by Justice Cardozo in 1914 with the epigrammatic dictum, “Every human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his own body” (Varkey, 2021). Respecting the principle of autonomy obliges the physician to disclose medical information and treatment options that are necessary for the patient to exercise self-determination and supports informed consent, truth telling, and confidentiality (Varkey, 2021). The patint and their wishes should always come first.
The Christian worldview, which is the focus of this text, is founded on the biblical narrative or story (Hoehner, 2020). This narrative is often summarized as the story of the creation, fall, redemption, and restoration of human beings, along with the entire created order (Hoehner, 2020). I believe the Christian biblical narrative would order the four principles as I have. All human beings, without exception, have an intrinsic dignity and value that is to be protected in every stage of life (Hoehner, 2020). Whether in health or sickness, with mental or physical disability, from its formation in the womb through the sometimes-debilitating effects of old age, humans have intrinsic value (Hoehner, 2020). I interpret this to mean autonomy comes first.

In practice I would rank the four principles based on the obligation I would hold as a nurse. The utmost of importance would be respect for autonomy. Since regardless of our own beliefs and principles we must do as a patient request. Respect for autonomy is defined as, “a principle requiring respect for the decisions of autonomous persons. In health care ethics, it means that patients have a right to hold views, to make choices, and to take actions based on their values and beliefs”(Hoehner, 2020).
In the context of the Christian biblical narrative, I feel that the principles would be ranked nonmaleficence, justice, respect for autonomy, and beneficence being last. According to, Hoehner,” Christian ethics views certain biomedical and medical practices, such as embryonic stem cell research, as immoral because it is using another human being (even a human being that is still an embryo) as a means to another end, even if that end is providing medical advances that may help many others—emphasis on may” (2020). So given that I feel that beneficence would go at the end of the principles. However, it is confusing to say the least since I would feel that nonmaleficence and beneficence would be at the top of the four principles.
