The paper has to connect to the readings, films and class discussions!
Your paper should be between 8-10 double-spaced pages.
You can elaborate on an earlier work of yourself or analyze a new media or conceptual problem.
Do not just stay at the level of content but grapple with the form that mediates, grounds, constructs the content. In the class specifically we looked at temporal forms from film to televisual flow to social media time-lines; how each determined a media-environment. By analyzing the form we also traced historical transformations in society affecting economic mode of production of commodities, values, new modes of labor; cultural trends in becoming subjects through media.
You will be graded on depth of your treatment of your subject matter; how well you formulate your problem, question or your approach; your articulation that threads principles, arguments, explanations with examples; your style through which you develop your own idiom of writing; your engagement with existing literature and your contribution to collectively addressed problems in the field and finally originality.
These are each important aspects but I do not expect you to focus on each and all of them or present a line of writing that expresses each of these qualities. For instance, your paper does not have to an extremely originaly perspective and instead might work on furthering incomplete lines of thinking that were developed in the texts, lectures or your own response papers. But, I will value your work that presents a profound rethinking of assumptions or brings in a new concept or quality to well-throdden forms of thinking (remember our discussion of the idea of “softness” in the last class found in the film “stalker”which was quite original).
These creteria are not weighed equally and uniformly for each project. You should take them as more paths you can follow to improve your writing. I will grade based on what’s there and not based on what’s not there.
Let me know if you have questions.
