Research Paper Proposal Instructions
Please follow the below format for your research proposal. As a reminder, the full research prompt is available on the assignment instructions later in this module. Please read and annotate the final research paper instructions so that you fully understand the assignment, as every single assignment in this module has you working on your research paper with the specific topic you picked based on the prompt.
This should be a minimum of ½ a page single-spaced, and no more than one page, single-spaced. I encourage you to spend time exploring topics so that you feel prepared to commit to one for this proposal.
You can copy and paste the below format onto a word/google doc and replace all the bracketed text with your answers (the text in the brackets explains what you should write, and offers some questions to think about), then copy and paste it into your submission text box (don’t type right in the submission box because you can’t save it!).
Please write in complete sentences, and go into as much depth as possible (not to exceed a full page single-spaced). The more specifics and details you provide me, the better position I am in to give you feedback on your topic.

Specific focus of my paper: [This is a description of the specific issue within your topic that you are exploring, ex. Representations of Hispanic women in T.V.]
Why I am writing about this topic: [If you are not invested in your topic, chances are your incentive to write about the subject will be weak. If you are interested in the topic you will probably write a better paper.]
My tentative thesis: [1-3 sentences. This is your argument. While I expect that you will revise your thesis as you research and write, it is good to start with one, as it will give you direction]
Approach to the subject of my paper: [Try to envision a logical way in which to present your material. In what order will you present your material to best address the issues? Will you have to define any terms? If so, which ones? Will you have to clarify terms and concepts? Do you think that inserting anecdotal evidence, for example, or using other rhetorical strategies will help your reader understand your paper? Will you show opposing viewpoints? Will you be comparing and contrasting? Will you be categorizing some information? Perhaps you will be using a number of these approaches in your paper. Let me know where you think you are headed.]
Intended audience: [Your readers should not be specialists in your field. Assume that your readers have, in general, your level of education, but are not necessarily as knowledgeable in the same subject. You will have to define terms and explain concepts. But beyond these obvious ground rules, discuss what people or group of people might benefit from reading your paper. While you do not provide this information in your paper directly, defining your audience for yourself will help guide how you write your paper.]
