Hello Class,
We can say conflicts within the workplace are also known as organizational conflicts, which are disputes between two parties at work. These conflicts arise when two or more people or parties have a difference of opinions. To create a healthy, environment where the workplace can operate without discrimination, you will need to defuse workplace conflicts as quickly as possible. This helps increase productivity and create a positive, collaborative workplace. When employees work together and acknowledge each other’s feelings and opinions, they have a better chance of avoiding discord. In the week 4 discussion, the class will get a better understanding of how conflict is established within the workplace in different ways, especially throughout periods of change. We will discuss how the signs of conflict exhibited in the workplace, how immunity and conflicts obstruct organizational change, and in what ways conflict can be used to create change in the workplace? Where I’m currently employed with the school district police department in Fort Bend County Tx, there were two dispatchers who didn’t see eye to eye and were involved in a verbal altercation constantly. One day one of the coworkers just had enough verbal abuse, so she jumped across the dispatch console and assaulted another coworker. Depending on the organization’s policy and procedures, both employees received disciplinary actions. Some organizations have a no-fight tolerance policy and will terminate both parties on the spot without any investigation or explanation on who started the fight. Resistance to change is expected and comes in many different types of forms such as sarcastic remarks, criticism, gossip, or even sabotage, but to eliminate these types of resistance, we would need a strong management team to reduce conflict through its ability by acting as a mediator. Higher ranking officers or the supervisor’s role is to offer support and encourage positive communication between the dissenting parties. It’s also their job to recognize workplace tension and consider every viewpoint when coming to a resolution. Policy and procedures are one way to paint a clear picture of how to resolve conflict in the workplace, also providing workers with video or training exercises may help defuse workplace conflicts and motivate employees which can lead to the attainment of company goals.
