Assignment Task
Questions of Research:
The following research questions will be addressed to fulfil the goal of this dissertation research:
What are the implications of using typical firefighting foams for the civil defence department and the surrounding environment?
How might employing environmentally friendly alternatives in firefighting help civil defence and the community?
How do traditional and ecologically friendly foams differ in terms of efficiency?
How many environmentally conscious counterparts effectively reduce environmental damages during and after fires?
Research Aims & Objectives:
The following are the research objectives:
Conduct a detailed literature review on the environmental and health consequences of traditional firefighting foams and the development of environmentally friendly foams.
Compare the performance of typical firefighting foams versus ecologically friendly alternatives in extinguishing fires in the laboratory and outdoor tests.
Assess the environmental impact of typical firefighting foams versus ecologically friendly alternatives by assessing each foam’s toxicity and biodegradability.
Compare the cost-effectiveness of typical firefighting foams with ecologically friendly alternatives.
Study Case
The research analysis will adopt results that were conducted by the Research Foundation of the National Fire Protection Association of the research report of the evaluation of the Fire Protection effectiveness of Flourine firefighting foams.
Fluorine Free Foams FFF are being marketed as acceptable alternatives instead of legacy fluorinated foams. The industry has reported variability in the performance of these formulated forms therefore leaving space for more investigation into their capabilities and limitations. The main objective of the research analysis is to determine the firefighting capabilities such as control extinguishment and burnback times of different types of FFFs in comparison to an Aqueous Film Film Foaming Foam AFFF.
Used Testing Materials & Parameters
Types of Foam tested:
⦁ Alcohol Resistant ( AR-FFF1,AR-FFF2)
⦁ Hydrocarbon-listed FFFs (H-FFF1 & H-FFF2)
Foam Qantiites: Lower Aspiration 3-4 expansion & Higher Aspiration 7-8 expansion
Types of Fuel Adopted in Test:
⦁ Heptane
⦁ Gasoline (MIL-SPEC / E10)
⦁ Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
Types of Water:
⦁ Fresh Water
⦁ Salt Water
