Overview
The major distinction between anthropoids and prosimians is that anthropoids are larger-brained monkeys, apes, and humans, whereas prosimians are small-sized, primitive primates like the lemurs of Madagascar, the lorises, pottos, and tarsiers of Southeast Asia. Additionally, anthropoids first appeared about 35 million years ago, and prosimians first appeared about 55 million years ago. Additionally, anthropoids are diurnal while prosimians are nocturnal.
In a nutshell, the groups of monkeys known as prosimians and anthropoids are descended from tree-dwellers. In general, they exhibit brachiation adaptations such the shoulder joint’s rotation, the big toe and thumb’s distance from other toes or fingers, and stereoscopic vision.
The primordial primates known as prosimians are those that are members of the Strepsirrhini and Haplorhini suborders of the order Primates. They consist of two from each of the four infraorders. Lemuriformes, which includes lemurs, lorises, and bushbabies, and Adapiformes, which includes extinct “lemur-like” primates, are the two infraorders that belong to the suborder Strepsirrhini. Additionally, Tarsiiformes (tarsiers) and Omomyiformes (extinct “tarsier-like” monkeys) are two infraorders of the suborder Haplorhini.
These have little brains compared to their body size if you take streptomycins. However, they also have huge olfactory lobes in their brains, which enhance their sense of smell. They possess these characteristics as well as the ability to detect pheromones because to their vomeronasal organ. They also have better night vision thanks to the reflective layer’s presence.
