The Paddington Square Development
Paddington Square is the new name for the development proposals previously known as Paddington Quarter and the Paddington Cube. The comprehensive 62,000 square metres mixed-used commercial development designed by Renzo Piano for the Great Western Developments Limited and Sellar Paddington Ltd (Clients) will transform the neglected and poor-quality sites around Paddington station into a vibrant and dynamic office, shop and restaurant destination. The project, however, faced many legal challenges from St Mary’s Hospital because it would lengthen ambulance journey times, and from heritage campaigners because the 111-year-old post office building was in a conservation area.
The £825m Paddington rejuvenation development received planning permission in 2017 for the project and construction started in August 2019, with expected completion by Spring 2022.
It is estimated that Paddington’s local economy will benefit by as much as £350m a year following completion of Paddington Square. The development will also bring in as many as 4,500 new jobs to the area.
