By carefully choosing a dozen details–a donut shop, an interaction on a street corner between a husband and wife–attempt to capture an entire place: a town, a state, a city, a county. After completing the exercise, create a short story (500-800 words) which includes two characters who live in the place you’ve described. Your story should give your readers a sense of who these characters are and what they want (out of life, from each other, the town, etc.). What transpires when they do (or do not) get what they want Focus on using concrete details!!! Give the piece a title. While this may become a story that you will develop later, do not submit a rough draft. It will be graded. Make the story as polished as you can. Proofread and edit before you submit.
