Cultural Research Paper : Students will write a minimum of 5 complete pages on the following:
Choose a Culture of interest which is not your own culture. It can be one where you have a large Population in your school. It must be one that you have little to know familiarity with. These Cultures have many ideas that have been used by Prior Students and will work for you:
- a) What was your knowledge of the Culture before? Why did you choose this culture? What assumptions had you made about the culture? Give some examples of this. Make text to self and world connections. Here you must use your voice and opinion.
- b) I) Choose 2 areas to explore in this part such as the different beliefs, values, practices, and other areas that interest you. For example, Religions, Languages, food traditions, etc. II) outside of I) You MUST explore explore Family Hierarchy, The role of Women, and Communication styles which can be verbal and non verbal.
Important if there is not enough information in II) in the Culture you chose then write more about I) from the culture.
- c) Education- 3 different areas need to be covered. For example, Importance of Education, How they view teachers ( for example, The school is a government building and one does not get involved much, Teachers are the experts and make the decisions. Parent input and voicing concerns is not welcomed or encouraged, at what age are children required to attend school, What are the quality of those schools, etc.
- d) Approach to Disability – For example, Is it acceptable, is it a scar on the family, are they accepted as part of the family, Are there schools for Special needs children, etc..
Causation- What is the belief of the culture to what is are the possible origins of the Disability, etc…
- e) There is an Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs. The Conclusion paragraph includes changes that you will make when communicating and engaging families from this country based on what you learned. This Conclusion paragraph describes at least-
6 actual specific changes that will be made regarding family engagement and curriculum ideas based on the specific culture explored. It must read like a real action plan with real depth explaining specific activities and/or actions that will be taken when working with this Culture. It cannot be a general plan that could be applied to many cultures.
That means that this family from this country is in your class in the USA.
- f) You must make in text citations from various sources used and You Must write a Reference section at the end of the paper. This page is not part of the 6 pages. At least 5 resources must be used. Resources are to be from articles from Journals and Websites that are organizations with an .edu or .org at the end of the site. It can also be .gov or Unesco or the United Nations. Blogs and similar resources cannot be used. Some might so ask…If you are not sure about a Reference then ask. You can also use a book for one of your references
You CANNOT use Wikipedia as a source for your paper.
You must use at least 2 articles from journals, they can be online journals.
- g) Important :. Formatting: You must use APA style which includes 1 inch margins, 12 point point font size.
Times New Roman font, and an Introduction paragraph. You do not need to write an Abstract . It must be written in Essay format.
Please do not include letters for each section but rather put in Subheadings for each area covered
