Instructions
1. Read the section in your textbook that discusses the work of Jan Vermerr
2. Look carefully at the painting called “A Woman Holding a Balance”, fig. 10-24).
3. You will notice that the woman is pregnant; she is holding a balance scale. Check out the painting on the wall behind her.
4. Do some research online about the painting and see what some of the other sources say about the meaning of Vermeer’s painting could be.
5. Write an essay (about 200 words) summing up what you discover. Be sure to answer the following questions:
• What is the subject of the painting on the wall?
• What is the relationship of the subject of the painting on the wall, to the balance scales the woman is holding?
• Does the light coming in from the window play a part in the meaning of the picture?
Be sure to cite your sources and provide works-cited information.
