Mind Map for Providing Culturally Appropriate Care 


After reviewing this module’s assigned readings, you will create a mind map identifying the six cultural phenomena that should be considered when providing culturally appropriate care to patients, according to Giger and Davidhizar. For each phenomenon, provide a brief description and example.

  • Step 1: Understand the Purpose of the Mind Map

A mind map is a visual learning tool that organizes ideas around a central concept.

For this assignment:

  • The central idea is Culturally Appropriate Patient Care.

  • The six branches will represent the cultural phenomena identified by Giger and Davidhizar.

The model comes from the book Transcultural Nursing: Assessment and Intervention.


Step 2: Place the Central Topic

In the center of your mind map write:

“Culturally Appropriate Patient Care”

From this central idea, draw six branches representing the six cultural phenomena.


Step 3: Identify the Six Cultural Phenomena

According to the Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural Assessment Model, the six phenomena are:

  6. Biological Variations

Each branch in your mind map should include a short description and example.

1. Communication

Description:

2. Space

Description:

Description:
Social organization refers to family structure, roles, religion, and community networks that influence decision-making.

Example:
A patient may want family members involved in healthcare decisions rather than making decisions individually.


4. Time

Description:
Time orientation refers to how individuals view the past, present, or future and how it affects health behaviors.

Example:
A patient who focuses on present needs may prioritize immediate relief rather than long-term disease prevention.


5. Environmental Control

Description:
Environmental control refers to a person’s beliefs about their ability to control health outcomes.

Example:
Some patients may believe illness is determined by fate or spiritual forces rather than medical causes.


6. Biological Variations

Description:
Biological variations include genetic differences such as skin color, metabolism, disease susceptibility, and physical characteristics.

Example:
Certain populations may have higher prevalence rates of conditions like hypertension or diabetes.


Step 5: Choose a Mind Map Format

You can create the mind map using digital tools such as:

  • Canva

  • MindMeister

  • Lucidchart

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

These tools allow you to create visual branches, colors, and icons to organize information clearly.


Step 6: Keep It Clear and Visual

Your mind map should include:

  • The central concept

  • Six labeled branches

  • A brief description

  • A short example

Avoid long paragraphs—use keywords and short phrases.
