////Below are the professors instructions, it states to write 2 essays, I am asking you to only write ONE, I will summit a different order for the other essay, I will include more instructions at the following the Professors instructions. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, Kind regards, Mike.////

These extra optional papers are very similar to the Essay discussion boards throughout the semester. The difference is you will use 1 essay, you need to start with a short summary, give me 2 topics (not just one), and a reaction. Please see below for full details.

This assignment is for 2 of these papers (so two essays handled separately). I will grade and replace your lowest test score.

The papers are to be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman font with 1” margins and are worth 50 points each. Sections in the Paper (think of them as one paragraph per section)

Summary = Give me a short (no more than a couple of sentences) summary of the reading. Who wrote the article and what it was about is essentially what you need to tell me. No opinion or critique here! 10 pts.

How it relates to the class = Tell me how this reading is related to what we have been discussing in class. For example, if we have been talking about marriage systems, tell me what type of marriage and residence patterns were demonstrated. I need at least 2

topics in their own paragraphs. There is a resource on Canvas (What to look for in essays and videos) that will start you on

the right path. 35 pts.

Reaction = Give me your personal reaction to the subject, or style, or author of the text. Often when we read these types of works for the first time we have a strong reaction to the material. It can be negative or positive. Just tell me how and why you think it affected you that way (this will be only a couple of sentences). 5 pts. ( USE A POSITIVE REACTION PLEASE)

////// My other instructions////

Please write this essay on “Shakespeare in the Bush” Again this is for Culture Anthropology ,,, the essay is included in the Additional Materials

A COUPLE OF TOPICS to talk about..1.) From the reading “Shakespeare in the Bush,” Laura Bohannan experiences different concepts in language and culture. For an example the word chief has a different meaning than her word chief, this resulted in the Tiv people to relate to the story differently than she does.

2.) Linguistic Relativity: Each language encodes

distinctions unique to that culture (i.e. if birds are

important in a culture, there will be many words and

ways to describe and categorize them).

 Linguistic Determinism: Each language exerts

specific psychological effects on its speakers.

Meaning, your primary language determines how you

think and view the world.

Benjamin Lee Whorf: studied grammatical aspects of the

Hopi language (e.g., syntax, tense) because it was

unique in their apparent lack of past and future tense.

Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: language determines the

worldview of its speakers. This meant the Hopi did not

have a sense of past and present and could only operate

in the present.
