This
capstone project, while based on the subjects covered in the last four
assignments, will foreground a Korean societal and cultural topic of the past
decade. With that said, this essay will also be a comparative study, analyzing
your chosen topic in 1) Korea and Japan, 2) Korea and China, or 3) all three
places!
LGBTQ+
relationships, including topics such as how religion affects how Korea, Japan, and China all view LQBTQ+ differently. Include aspects such as how on the surface (for ex in Japan) it is accepted but under the surface it isn’t (for ex korea and japan won’t let gay couples or single parents adopt)
Paper
length: 8-10 pages
Proper footnotes and a bibliography are required! (chicago style)
What will
I be looking for?
·
a
thesis paragraph that clearly addresses the scope of the entire paper
Example: “While _______________ is shown
to be an issue in many parts of East Asia in the 21st century, Korean
society is far more open to _______________ than ____________. Looking
specifically at …”
·
a
good deal of well-analyzed data to reinforce your thesis arguments
·
at
varied bibliography (of at least 8 sources) that contains at least one
scholarly article, most sources being from the last ten years
·
a
spell-checked, grammar-checked essay!
Finally,
the best essays will incorporate some of the larger issues and themes we have
been discussing all semester. Is the issue mainly about gender and patriarchy, or
is class and status involved? What “isms” are dominating this subject—such as Confucianism,
capitalism, or regionalism? Have modern interpretations of masculinity,
femininity, or gender identity been influenced by past historical or cultural
practices?
