Overview: A scholarly article is an article written by scholars or professionals in a field; always contains references to sources used in the article. The articles that we have read in class so far have all come from scholarly reviewed sources, and experts in the field of criminal justice. In order to understand and recognize scholarly articles we will have an assignment called “scholarly article critique” where not only will you familiarize yourself with scholarly articles and their blueprint, but also how to distinguish author’s point of view.
Topic: Research and critique a scholarly article in the subject of law and justice, based on concepts and theories we have learned and discussed in class during the semester. You can select 1 – 3 of these (theories and concepts) and focus your research as it relates to law and justice. The subject matter of these articles is your choice; however, it must explore law and justice, using as previously mentioned theories and concepts from our class.
You will be responsible to provide a (8) eight – page written critique of the article. An article critique should (somewhat) follow this format:
Write your critique in standard essay form. It is generally best not to follow the author’s organization when organizing your analysis, since this approach lends itself to a summary rather than analysis.
Begin with an introduction that defines the subject of your critique and your point of view.
Defend your point of view by raising specific issues or aspects of the argument.
Conclude your critique by summarizing your argument and re-emphasizing your opinion.
Specifics:
You will first need to identify and explain the author’s ideas. Include specific passage that support your description of the author’s point of view.
Offer your own opinion. Explain what you think about the argument. Describe several points with which you agree or disagree.
For each of the points you mention, include specific passages from the text (you may summarize, quote, or paraphrase) that provide evidence for your point of view.
Explain how the passages support your opinion
Of course do not forget to give credit where credit is due! If you are quoting, cite!
Required Resources: The article you choose must be at least 15 pages in length, and from a scholarly source. Scholarly sources can be generally identified by several features:
Content (topic being discussed)
Language (higher level language and discipline-specific terminology)
Intent (case study, report of experimental results…)
Authorship (qualifications of author to write on the topic, usually an advanced degree with years of experience and research on the topic)
Peer-review (material is evaluated by experts and only published if meets the discipline’s standards)
References (other materials used in the research process are listed in a bibliography or footnotes)
Listing (check LexisNexis, Google Scholar, JSTOR, etc.) You can also contact our library for further assistance.
