All students must submit a semester paper. The paper should be about 5-7 pages long. The paper is due, in paper form, at the beginning of class.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE PAPER:
The paper must address the components of the built form of ANY city from one of the subject areas covered in class. It is acceptable to aggregate cities into groups such as: Latin American cities, pre-Columbian cities, Spanish colonial cities.
The paper must have theoretical underpinnings. Those theories can be those covered in the class (i.e. pre-Columbian cities, Spanish colonial, Latin American etc;) or can be another theory not covered in class. Theories not covered in class need to be researched and well described in the paper.
The paper must have a source outside of class. This outside source should be a book, article or paper that deals with your subject. A website is not considered an outside source. Website information can be used but it will not count toward as an outside source. You will need to endnote/footnote the source in your paper. You must have one source but more are always welcome. It is wise to consider the source of information before using it in your paper.
Using a city covered in class will require the analysis to be above and beyond what readings and class notes have covered.
Write and effective paper I urge you to develop a hypothesis or research statement that will guide your efforts and help you to focus your topic into something manageable. Some examples of a hypothesis or research statement are:
Example 1: Mexico City suburban shantytowns were a logic response to the drastic demographic changes caused by rural to urban migration.
Example 2: The physical growth of Latin American cities between 1850-1910 reflected the political, social, and economic climate of neocolonialism.
Example 3: Spanish colonial cities were planned for the maximization of colonial wealth extract.
