Book Critique Assignment Instructions
Overview
You will write a Book Critique on Martin’s, Prevailing Worldviews of Western Society Since 1500. The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with a framework through which to evaluate comparative politics and current public policy issues. In this assignment, you will outline the main components of the book, critique the work, explain how the book applies to the study of comparative politics, and apply the work to a current public policy issue.
Instructions
The Book Critique must be 5–6 pages, not including the title and reference page, and in APA formatting. Structure the paper in four main sections: summary, critique, application, and policy review. Do not summarize or critique the chapters chronologically, but rather consider the book as a whole. You should avoid excessive quotations and instead state the author’s viewpoints in your own words, providing specific page references when paraphrasing. The paper must include at least two references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. Each submission must be in a Microsoft Word document. Consult the Book Critique Grading Rubric before starting this assignment.
Summary
In this section, you will summarize the main themes of the book. What is the overall perspective, purpose, and argument of the book? What is the scope of the book? What are the methods of the book? If the author wanted the reader to get one idea from the book, what would it be?
Critique
In this section, you will highlight and explain the book’s strengths and weaknesses. What makes the book noteworthy? What has the book accomplished? In what ways was the book effective or persuasive? It is necessary to challenge assumptions, approaches, and/or arguments made by the author. Does the argument make sense? You may offer agreement or disagreement as well as identify where the work is exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. You must provide concrete evidence for assertions and support these judgments with references from the textbook readings in this course and other scholarly resources.
Application
In this section, you will demonstrate how the book has enhanced your understanding of current public policy issues in the comparative politics context. Why is this topic important today? How can this information be used in forming an understanding of comparative politics?
Policy Review
In this section, you will identify and assess a current public policy issue in relation to the theories presented in Martin’s book. You will provide a short but detailed briefing on the policy, and analyze the policy based on the perspective gained in reading this book. You must also introduce new ideas that go beyond the book.
