Critique of A Qualitative Study

emphasis should be placed on method and sample- this is my portion of the assignment

Critique of a Qualitative Study Group PowerPoint Presentation and Discussion Board: 15%
Due: Module 5, Week 10
Qualitative research is a widely used nursing research method. The purpose of this assignment is to give a framework for critiquing a qualitative study. A critique of a research study is an appraisal of its strengths and weaknesses, and its applicability to practice. A critique is an evaluation of the study, not a re-write of the study.
There are 3 parts to this assignment:
1. Group PowerPoint
2. Discussion Board comments by each student
3. Peer Review submitted by each student
Groups will be assigned by the faculty by approximately Week 6. Each group will also be assigned a qualitative study. Students will work within the group assigned and fully address the following topics as they apply in a 10-12 content slide PowerPoint Presentation, not including title slide and reference slide.
One member from each group (the group-appointed leader) will submit the final group PowerPoint Presentation in two (2) places:
1. The assignment submission link in Module 5
2. The Discussion Board in Module 5
The Group PowerPoint Presentation is due by Friday at 11:59 pm of Week 10. Submissions handed in late will be subject to a 5 point per day lateness penalty, unless prior arrangements have been made between the students and the instructor.
This is a group project; however, each student will receive an individual grade based on one’s peer review, as well as the final PowerPoint Presentation that is posted. Therefore, all students must contribute equally to the success of the assignment. The Peer Review (see Peer Review of Group Work) is due by Friday at 11:59 pm of Week 10. Please read rubric carefully.
Once the PowerPoint Presentations are posted on the Discussion Board, each student will look at the work submitted by the other groups and comment on their presentation’s relevance to nursing practice, as well as their content and visual appeal. This is a non-graded Discussion Board, but must be completed by each student by Monday of Week 11.
Critique of Qualitative Study Rubric
Address these topics/areas in the 10-12 slide PowerPoint Presentation clearly and concisely. Review textbook, especially Chapter 15.
Identify the different areas of the study and critique it according to these guidelines:
· Title:
· Is the title of reasonable length? How do you know? Is it clear?
· Are the study concepts mentioned in the title?
· Does the title suggest the population under investigation? If so, who? Make sure the title of the study is on the first slide.
10
Abstract:
Is the purpose clearly, concisely stated?
Is there a brief summary of the results?
10
· Introduction:
· Was the problem statement clearly stated?
· Is the problem and its importance to nursing discussed and supported by logical arguments?
10
· Literature Review:
· Is there a literature review? (It may be small and not labeled as such. It may be in the introduction where the author refers to other related studies.)
· Are the researcher’s literature sources: primary? secondary? current (within the past 5 years of the article’s publication)?
· Is the review merely a summary of past work or does it critically appraise and compare the key studies (noting strengths and weaknesses)?
10
· Methods:
· Is there a specific design, tradition, or method of qualitative research used?
· Critique if this is an appropriate method to use for this topic.
· Describe the data collection method.
· Is the method of data collection consistent with the study design?
· How was informed consent obtained?
· Protection of participants?
10
· Sample:
· What was the sample size?
· What sampling strategies were utilized?
· the sample seem adequate? (Sample size is larger for a quantitative study because a power analysis will tell the researchers how many subjects they need depending on the number of variables. Sample size is smaller for qualitative studies because once the researchers reach data saturation they can stop.)
· Does the researcher give reasons for their selection?
· What is the setting of the study? Is the setting appropriate for the study?
10
Analysis:
Describe the researcher’s data analysis.
Any bias noted?
Did any themes or theories emerge and if so, what were they?
15
· Results/Discussion:
· Briefly describe the results (outcomes) of the study?
· Does the researcher address the results in relationship to all research questions stated in the article?
· Are limitations to the study discussed, do you agree? Are there other limitations not mentioned that could skew the results?
15
Summary Assessment:
Clinical relevance: After reading this study, describe your understanding of the topic of the study. Does it seem trustworthy?
What does this study contribute to nursing practice?
Based on your critique do you believe this is a valid study?
Is there evidence of transferability?
