This assignment is designed to introduce you to your role of an advocate for children and families.  Advocate means to speak for, or to speak in support of. There are many ways to advocate. This assignment focuses on public policy and advocacy.  Please submit a one page word processed advocacy letter addressed to the appropriate lawmakers.

Assignment Instructions:

• Identify a piece of legislation at the state or federal level that has an impact on children and their families. Write a letter of support or against this legislation to the appropriate lawmakers. If a law was recently passed or voted on, write to your lawmaker thanking them for their vote or registering your disagreement with their vote. • Research your chosen legislation. Identify who is the sponsor, and where the bill is in the process of becoming law.  Submit a copy of the summary for this legislation or the web link, and any other pertinent information.
• Identify the proper lawmaker that you want to write to. This contact information can be located either at the local Public Library Reference Desk or On-line at: Tracking the United States Congress Links to an external site..
