The First leader is Herman Boone. He had a dictative leadership style. Boone believed that through cooperation of the entire team will lead to a win. He also believed that each player has to understand each other culture. He had a very clear vision as how to succeed with the team and how to have a strong team to work hard with full determination and courage. He also had transactional lead where he punishes the players if they were doing something wrong directly or indirectly which helped him to control the team through his powers. He knew very well that players had loved for the football game and he had faith in his players that’s they will definitely going to win the game if every player corporate. He had a good leadership quality as he approached Yoast to be his assistance coach.
He wanted to have a strong team and win. His team to be successful he had to ensure that all the team members work together and respect each other. It was important for the team to work hard and be committed at all the times. Through his power he was able to have a transactional lead and whenever the players were wrong he punishes them and he had the control over them to improve and bring a standard in the team. He knew very well that the players had loved for the football game and he can make the team to work together and used their love as a motivator to make sure they cooperate and they don’t fight with each other as far as racist is concerned.
My Second leader in Remember the Titans is Coach Bill Yoast. Coach Yoast used democratic leadership styles. Coach Yoast, meet students personally. He discuss the issues and personally try to solve the problem rather than in front of other team members.
In Remember the Titans Coach Yoast display his qualities in such a way that he handled each difficult situation with ease. He used to keep his players cool so that he can have control over them and he can help them individually if need arises. He was a calm Coach. He was not that strict and straight forward as Coach Boone as a leader.
Effectiveness as a leader
Team members respected him a lot since he was able to bring all players together with different race through pairing black and white players together. He had confident and courage through which he was able to make his team win. Coach Boone was a effective leader he was just like a leader who is born with so more powerful in his words.
He was a effective leader with confident and courage through which his team won. He was independently and stubbornly as often see in the movie which wins the victory. He was very much concerned with the players and how they feel. He had strengthen, confidence, enthusiasm and unity of player.
Type of power
Coach Boone held expert power which is “power that results from leader’s special knowledge or skill regarding tasks performed by followers”(Daft,2008). He was a true expert of football with superior knowledge of coaching the team. He had full control over his team. He also held referent power since he had ability to convey a sense of personal acceptance. Coach Boone highly influences his team member through his strength.
How he used his power
He used his power in a good way but sometimes he was so hard on players during training period. But through his tough training and strict on players he was able to make his team win. He used his power as Head coach to achieve his goals and to promote interracial interaction in hope of improving the team. Since he was black with power some white players didn’t want to accept his authority but through his power he forces the players to tolerate with each other until racial conflict is solved. By the end of training camp players started respecting his leadership more and don’t look at his power as unlawful and hurtful. He achieved his objectives through strong sense of skill proficiency responsibility and dedication of team.
Type of Power
Coach Yoast also held expert power he was a true expert and real man of football. He was coach for many years but due to his name nominated for hall of fame he become assistant coach. He also had referent power that is leaders personality characteristics that command follower’s identification and respect to emulate the leaders. Players were admire his power and strengthen.
How he used his power
He used his power in good way towards his team and player. During one of the game when he saw that referee was biased towards the team he talk with referee and was quite angry on it. Due to this action he lost his hall of fame nominee and he didn’t care of it because according to him he thinks that team and win of the game is more important. In the beginning of the movie he said that he is taking break for one year from football and all his players said there are also leaving the game and there will be boycott. After thinking about the student he step back to take assistant coach position.
SITUATION FROM THE MOVIE:
A situation in a movie was during the game a player was injured with a broken wrist and was replaced by Ronnie. This short conversation between Coach Boone and Ronnie in which Boones says to Ronnie that he is the colonel and he has to command his troops. Coach Boone dialogue speech was supportive however he believes in the team because of level of competence, confidence and commitment in them. One player from the team stands ups and gives a small talk to the entire team, demanding and expecting more than Coach Boone. This scene tells us straight that the team doesn’t need much more support or leader. Coach Boone realises this and gives responsibility to the players. Another situation where Coach Yoast tries to put Ronnie in the game but Ronnie declines that he can’t play that position and he suggested Petey to play instead of him as Ronnie thinks Petey is a better player than him. Coach Yoast allows Ronnie to make the choice to play or not to play.
Describe the types of team conflict that were present in the video.
1 – Lack of Role Clarity
The project manager is accountable for assigning tasks to each project team member. In adding, they often take for granted that team members appreciate what is being inquired of them. This assumption can be wrong, leading to team members being indistinct on what needs to be accomplished. A good scheme manager takes the time to explain the tasks, their prospect and timeframes around conclusion.
2 – Difference in Prioritizing Tasks
Just because the project boss thinks the task is a milestone, the team member completing the task may not. Team members may be working simultaneously on multiple projects and cannot differentiate the priority of one project’s tasks from another. The project manager should try to explain the importance of the overall project to the company and help prioritize their tasks as needed.
3 – Working in Silos
Often, project team members work independently. They may work distantly or in a dissimilar location from additional project team members. Conflict happens when team members are not conscious of what others are responsibility and are not communicating with one one more. The project manager wants to bring the team together to talk about project status and fence to getting the project completed punctually. If team members working in silos can imagine how they are a part of the bigger image, they will be more motivated and feel like a fraction of the team.
4 – Lack of Communication
Project managers have to foster a clear line of communication flanked by scheme team members. In order to reduce duplication of efforts, the project boss should communicate prospect to all team members. The scheme manager needs to be easily easy to get to to project team members at all times throughout the project. If team members cannot reach their scheme manager or other team members, they may turn in circles needlessly.
5 – Waiting on Completion of Task Dependencies
Some errands cannot be started until other tasks are completed. Team members require to understand the impact of their position on others. For example if one team member is accountable for ordering gear and another for installing the equipment, one task is needy on the other. Conflict can happen if the first team associate is late in completing their tasks.
Describe any team dysfunction or effective team characteristics demonstrated in the video that may have affected team dynamics and team performance.
Clear Goals : This is essential so that all team members appreciate the purpose and dream of the team. It is important to appreciate where the team is headed. This move shows a classic example of team forming stages. The various stages of forming a group are:
• Forming stage
• Storming stage
• Norming stage
• Performing stage
Adjouring stage
1. In the forming stage following activities happen:
• First time all team members get together
• Bonding and ice breaker sessions are required in this stage
• Members have to develop trust in the new team
• Goals and expectations from the group have to be set
In the movie, Coach Boone and Yoast are given separate tasks but meanwhile they are entrusted to make the team a united one. Gerry Bertier being the team captain and all American, spoke up to the Boone regarding who should be selected in the teams. Coach Boone was having none of it. He asked Bertier, whose team it was and Bertier backed out. Boone quickly realized the mammoth task he had in his hands. While going to the training camp, he ensured that everyone paired up with member from opposite race and sat with them.
In this we can see that, the teams have been formed but there is still no communication and support to each members. Coach therefore ensures that even though it is hard for the players, they are made to sit with each other and start developing a communication channel with each other. The expectations of the team was also displayed- they had to work together as a unified team.
The first phase of group development is recognized as the forming stage. The forming stage represents a occasion where the group is just starting to come jointly and is characterized with nervousness and uncertainty. Members are careful with their behavior, which is ambitious by the desire to be conventional by all members of the group. Conflict, argument and personal opinions are avoided still though members are beginning to form imitation of each other and gain an understanding of come again? the group will do together. Some consider this cautious behavior prevents the group from receiving any real work done. However, the center for group members throughout the forming stage is to turn out to be familiar with each other and their reason, not on work.
2. In the Storming stage, following activities happen:
• Members express differences in opinions, feelings
• There will be control issues
• Communications can develop or break down
• Team spirit and morale can be changed
Going back to the movie, when quarterback Rev is not blocked by white players, Campbell talks to Bertier and asks him whey as a captain he is not ensuring team is working together. Bertier responds that Campbell himself was holding back and not playing to his strengths. Campbell then responds that there is no unity in the team and when that is the case, everyone will play for themselves. This incident led Bertier to realize that as a captain and leader of the team, it is his responsibility to ensure the team plays well. He starts scolding the teammates when they slack off or not block the black players thereby gaining respect form Coach, Campbell and other black players.
In storming stage, it is quite common for all members to express their feelings and problems. It is this stage where the manager or leader of the team has to take great patience and effort in ensuring that the team morale increases and does not go down. The captain in this case takes onus upon himself to set the example and try to resolve the conflicts in the team.
The second phase of group development is recognized as the storming stage. The storming stage is where disagreement and competition are at its most. This is because now that group members have an sympathetic of the task and a universal feel for who they are as a group and who group members are, they sense confident and begin to address some of the additional important issues adjacent the group. Such issues can relate to things similar to the group’s tasks, individual roles and everyday jobs or even with the group part themselves.
3. In norming stage, following activities happen:
• Team bond gets stronger
• Members appreciate each other
• Motivation to work together as a team gets developed
• Small success factors can be seen
In the movie, we can see that after coming back from the camp, the team starts bonding well with others. The leaders takes initiative to ensure that such feeling and bonding remains intact during the course of the season. The warm up scene is showcase of the norming stage, where the team does a dance to entertain and have fun while working.
Such cases show the team bonding success and how they appreciate being there for others. The whole team comes together and by this stag they want to work for each other and help out others who are in need. Success are also shown on field corresponding to the team bonding.
Once a group take delivery of the clarity that it so very much needs, it can move on to the third stage of group growth, known as the norming stage. The norming phase is the time where the group becomes a unified unit. Morale is high as group members actively acknowledge the talents, skills and experience that each member brings to the group. A sense of group of people is recognized and the group remains focused on the group’s reason and goal. Members are flexible, mutually dependent and trust each other. Leadership is communal, and members are willing to become accustomed to the needs of the group. Information flows flawlessly and is not reserved due to the sense of security members sense in the norming stage.
4. The last stage of team development i.e. performing stage has following actions:
• There is trust in team members
• Members appreciate and work for each other
• There is high level of motivation and pride in the team
• Team mentality gets installed
In the movie, the team perfroms better than the expecatiaons. The team knows each other well and even after losing few members they are still able to perform at the high level of consistency. The team glory comes before the individual honors. Bosley sacrificed his position to Petey Jones since he was better suited to the role and could help the team in winning the game. Even both the coaches put aside their differences and worked together to win the championship.
The reason the team was able to win was down to the hard work they did and the bonding they had in the team. We can understand that when there is trust in the team and team members, people are willing to go the extra mile and help in team achieving the target.
At its climax, the group moves into the fourth stage of group growth, known as the performing stage. The performing phase is marked by high output. Group members are unified, loyal and helpful. Competence in all members is seen, let for a high level of autonomy in decision creation. Problem solving, experimentation and difficult possible solutions are high as group members are listening carefully on task completion and attainment. The overall objective of the group throughout the performing stage is to complete their task and fulfill their purpose though goal achievement.
Adjouring stage
The adjourning stage in the team stages process deals with the separation of the team, which occurs when the goal or task of the team has been reached and the existence of said team is no longer required. After achieving a perfect football season of 13-0, the Titans moved on to all different new opportunities, jobs, and schools, officially disbanding as a team and entering the adjourning stage to end the team stages process. In the movie, the adjourning stage is seen immediately after the Titans are celebrating their win of the championship game to end their season with the voice over of Coach Yoast’s daughter. She informs the audience that one of the players, Gerry Bertier, had won a gold medal in the wheelchair shot-put games and then some time later passed away
5. There were many decision that the coach took in helping the group of individuals to become a team. As manager I would also like to do the same. Few key areas which I would improve upon based on the group development dynamics are:
• Ensuring there is proper communication within the team
• Let the team have a creative mindset
• Managers putting their differences aside to work on team developments.
