Step-by-Step Student Guide
Step 1: Choose Your Policy
Select a policy that addresses a benchmark—such as infection prevention, readmission reduction, fall prevention, or a new regulatory requirement (e.g., CMS, OSHA, HIPAA updates).
Example: A new hand hygiene compliance policy to improve infection control benchmarks.
Step 2: Craft Your Elevator Speech (Slide 1–2)
Include:
-
What the policy is in simple, persuasive language
-
Why it’s urgently needed (tie it to data or regulatory change)
-
The goal: Better compliance, better outcomes, or higher staff/patient safety
Example: “This policy ensures 95% hand hygiene compliance, reducing HAIs by 30% over six months.”
Step 3: Identify and Justify the Pilot Group (Slide 3)
Describe the team/unit who will first implement the policy. Explain:
-
Why they are ideal (e.g., high patient turnover, engaged leadership, baseline data)
-
How their success will inform system-wide rollout
Example: ICU nurses were selected because of high exposure risk and strong baseline reporting habits.
Step 4: Link to Benchmarks and Metrics (Slide 4)
Show how you’ll measure success. Include:
-
Current vs. target compliance
-
Quality indicators (e.g., infection rate, adverse events)
-
Timeline for comparison (pre- and post-training data)
Step 5: Summarize Training Implementation (Slides 5–6)
Highlight your training plan:
-
How many sessions (e.g., 2 one-hour classes)
-
What type: lecture, simulation, skills lab
-
How learners will be evaluated (e.g., return demo, written quiz)
-
CE credit, documentation, and scale-up plan
Step 6: Create Your Annotated Training Agenda
Download and complete the template:
Annotated Training Agenda Template (DOCX)
Include:
-
Sessions (e.g., “Hand Hygiene 101,” “Infection Prevention in Action”)
-
Trainers/resources (e.g., infection control RN, sanitizer dispensers, audit sheets)
-
Assessment (skills checklist, knowledge test)
-
CE credit tracking
-
Plan for scaling to new hires and other departments
-
Sustainability plan (e.g., quarterly refresher, compliance audits)
Step 7: Prepare and Record Your PowerPoint
Use:
SoNHS Presentation Guidelines (PPTX)
Record Audio in PowerPoint – Microsoft Guide
Step 8: Cite Evidence (2–4 sources)
Use recent peer-reviewed or government sources to support:
-
The policy rationale
-
The training strategy
-
Buy-in techniques (stakeholder engagement, adult learning)
