Exploring Equality, Equity, and Justice Through AI Reflection

This activity  explores the topics of EQUALITY, EQUITY & JUSTICE. These three terms show up often in your readings/videos as well as in public debates/discussions about education and official education policies and laws. Developing a clear and accurate understanding of the differences between the three can not only help you to assess policies & practices inside/outside of schools, but also help you to develop your own practices (no matter what field you plan to enter) that are more clearly/firmly rooted in meeting the goals of each. Additionally, we will be learning about the pros and cons of using ChatGPT (and other generative AI sites).

Indeed, the use of ChatGPT in the educational realm has been a controversial debate – with some finding it, and other AI programs, highly disruptive in learning processes and outcomes. Thus, the main purpose of this assignment is to reflect on the major implications of this artificial intelligence technology while exploring a central concept to this course: equality vs. equity vs. justice.

Instructions: Watch both Dr. Rose’s mini lessonLinks to an external site. and the YouTube video posted below. Think about a particular point that triggered your interest in the TED Talk video“Solving the Achievement Gap Through Equity, Not Equality” of Lindsay OttLinks to an external site.

  • Then, copy and paste the following prompt into ChatGPT: Act as a college student writing a reflection for an undergraduate level course. I want you to prepare a one to two paragraph response explaining difference between equality, equity, and justice. Then, identify a commonly-experienced issue or problem in schools and provide three solutions: one that is rooted in equality, one in equity, and one in achieving justice.
  • In a word document, copy and paste the ChatGPT response.
  • Highlight any confusing or incorrect information in the response, and
  • In BLUE TEXT add in your personal perspectives/opinions and connections to specific ideas from course content.
  • Then, in an additional 1-2 paragraph reflection,
    • discuss the advantages and weaknesses of the ChatGPT-generated response provided by the AI tool guided by answering ALL THREE of  the questions below. Please, provide details and examples from the ChatGPT created response to support your arguments.

1. In your opinion, did the response from ChatGPT feel human or could you immediately identify it as a robot-generated response? Explain.

2. Reflecting on the information you added in blue text, do you think ChatGPT enhanced your learning process, creativity and productivity or limited your learning and boxed you in creatively, hindering your productivity?

3. Finally, share your overall perspective on the potential impacts of ChatGPT on education. Many point to its potential to transform education while others note the negative impact it’s had on academic integrity.

  • Where do you sit on these perspectives?
  • In other words, what are the major Pros and Cons to utilizing ChatGPT and other AI programs, in educational spaces?
  • How does this add to the conversation of equality, equity and justice?

Step 1: Watch the Required Videos

  • Watch Dr. Rose’s mini-lesson and Lindsay Ott’s TED Talk: “Solving the Achievement Gap Through Equity, Not Equality.”

  • Take notes on key points, particularly definitions and examples of equality, equity, and justice.

Step 2: Generate a ChatGPT Response

  1. Open ChatGPT and paste this prompt:

Act as a college student writing a reflection for an undergraduate level course. I want you to prepare a one to two paragraph response explaining the difference between equality, equity, and justice. Then, identify a commonly-experienced issue or problem in schools and provide three solutions: one that is rooted in equality, one in equity, and one in achieving justice.

  1. Copy and paste the AI-generated response into a Word document.

Step 3: Annotate the AI Response

  • Highlight confusing or incorrect information.

  • Add your personal perspectives in BLUE TEXT, making connections to course content, readings, or videos. For example:

    • Correct misconceptions about equity vs. justice

    • Provide a concrete classroom example

    • Discuss how historical inequities relate to the solutions proposed

Step 4: Personal Reflection

Write an additional 1–2 paragraphs addressing:

  1. Human vs. AI Response:

    • Did the response feel human, or was it obviously AI-generated?

    • Were there any phrases, structure, or examples that seemed generic or overly simplified?

  2. Impact on Your Learning:

    • Did adding your personal insights enhance creativity and critical thinking?

    • Did ChatGPT limit your ideas or provide a useful starting point for your reflection?

  3. Overall Perspective on ChatGPT in Education:

    • Consider potential pros: rapid idea generation, exposure to structured reasoning, alternative viewpoints.

    • Consider potential cons: risk of overreliance, reduced original thinking, academic integrity concerns.

    • Reflect on how this intersects with equality, equity, and justice: e.g., AI could increase access to learning tools (equity), but if misused, it could reinforce advantages for students with better access (inequity).

Step 5: Formatting

  • Include title, AI-generated response with blue annotations, and personal reflection

  • Length: 3–4 pages total (or as required by instructor)

  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced

  • Include APA-style references for videos and readings

Step 6: Optional Enhancements

  • Include specific school examples for equality, equity, and justice solutions

  • Provide citations from course content to support your reflections

  • Use clear headings to organize sections: AI Response, Blue Annotations, Personal Reflection
