Meta-cognitive pondering!
Due Tues., July 26. 500 words! Meta-cognitive/reflection essay on one or two of the pieces/writers we’ve read, and what you plan to read/watch/do this summer as your artistic “Darwinian” escape from the travails of daily life.
So what does this mean?????
Writer we read:
1- poet: Langston Hughes poem published: 1951
Harlem
2- James Baldwin’s essay “Notes of a Native Son”
3-Ethan Frome BY Edith wharton
Write a short personal response essay of 500 (more or less) words in which you reflect on some work we’ve read in this course that has touched you and/or spoken to you the most deeply. (Pick one or two writers and/or pieces.) Just write about what the pieces meant to you and how they opened your eyes to great literature! This is an intensely personal and reflective project, but make sure you use sophisticated and academic language. Also, think about Szymborska’s poem “Consolation” where she discusses Darwin reading happy-ending novels as escape, and write a few lines about what sort of artistic escape YOU will engage in as the summer progresses. Be very specific here! Name names!
DO NOT summarize plot!
DO NOT start your essay with vague generalities (boring “throat clearing). Jump right in with a thesis statement naming the work(s), the author(s), and making some sort of statement about them.
DO discuss how the work you have chosen has furthered and enhanced your appreciation of great literature.
Make clear what is meaningful TO YOU in the writer(s) you have chosen.
Make sure your essay reveals your mind at work. Write down your thinking; you are exploring issues. You are not giving answers or final judgments.
You are proving that you have read thoughtfully and carefully.
Also, briefly mention what fiction, poetry, or drama you plan to read before this summer ends!
(And of course place/write your essay in the “write submission” area. DO NOT submit in the “comments” box!)
