Instructions

Onboarding new associates, when done correctly, takes a significant amount of time. It takes time for the new associate and it takes time for the parties responsible for orienting new associates to their job duties and the organization’s culture. These responsible parties may, and typically do, include Department Managers, Assistant Managers, Store Managers, Hourly Supervisors, Training Coordinators, and others.

In this exercise, you are a manager with two new employees who have completed the orientation process.

  1. Based on your observations, think about what recommendations you might have for the onboarding program to better prepare new hires
  2. Write a memo to the HR Department addressing the following:
    • Explain why it is important for new hires to have a clear understanding of the company’s mission statement, goals, and core values
    • Describe two activities that your location conducts that are effective in the new employee orientation process
    • Recommend two activities to improve the onboarding experience at your location
