Unit II Short Essay Question: Compare and contrast the competing ideas about ‘de

Unit II Short Essay Question:
Compare and contrast the competing ideas about ‘development’ in the so-called ‘Third World’ that circulated in the 1950s and 1960s. What kinds of development policies and ideologies did Cold War powers such as the United States, the Soviet Union, and the People’s Republic of China incorporate and export in their attempts to gain influence among former colonies, and how would you describe the range of visions for national development that African leaders implemented in the years after independence?
Your essay must consult at least:
1 reading material assigned in module I
2 reading materials assigned in module II, including at least one primary source.
1 Lecture from either module I or II
Your essays should be 4-5 double spaced, 12-pt Times New Roman font pages. You do not need to conduct outside research for this essay; therefore, you do not need to include footnotes. Instead, please use in-text parenthetical citations— for example, (Westad, p 400).
Grading Criteria and Rubric for the Essay
As these are open-ended questions with many possible arguments and interpretations, I will grade your essays according to two main criteria. The first criterion is about your mastery of the subject: Does the essay demonstrate mastery of course materials and insight into the subject? The second criterion is about presentation (clarity, organization, neatness) and the care you take to describe where you got an idea or an argument: Is the essay coherently structured and well written? Does it refer explicitly to arguments and examples advanced in the course learning materials? There are a variety of different ways to make an argument and to organize arguments into an essay. The main thing though is to advance an argument and to organize your essay in logical manner.
I will use the following breakdown for scoring this essay:
30 pts: Argument- Do you provide a clear and cogent answer to the essay question presented in this prompt?
20 pts: Evidence – Does your paper consult at least the minimum number of course materials outlined in the instructions for this essay?
20 pts: Interpretation – Do you provide a coherent and thorough consideration of the sources you include in your essay?
15 pts: Critical, nuanced, and thoughtful discussion – Do you put your evidence base together into a nuanced discussion? Do you weave your evidence together to support your central argument?
15 pts: Grammar and Style
Total: 100 pts
