Listed below are primary documents related to some of the main topics in chapter 29. Before each set of documents is a brief explanation of the readings followed by several questions. DO NOT WRITE ON ONE QUESTION FROM EACH SET OF DOCUMENTS! Write on one question from one set of documents, and follow the format below:
Type in the question you are answering above your response. Clearly state your position and 2-3 of the main points you intend to discuss in the first paragraph. Avoid using words such as “I”, “we”, and “my”. In the following paragraphs cite facts from the documents to support your position and explain how/why these facts support your position. Reference the documents and the text if applicable within your essay in parenthesis after the passage it references. The last paragraph, your conclusion, should sum up your main points/facts and explain how/why they support your position. The length requirement is 1 to 1 1/2 pages single-spaced.
In 1994 the Republican party captured the House of Representatives and the Senate providing them the opportunity to further a conservative agenda. The new Republican majority drafted “The Contract With America”, a document that outlined several economic strategies, but also several points to restore public faith in the government. As you read the document carefully analyze the key points and consider if the contract was about reform or a method to win future elections with its promises.

In 1998 President Bill Clinton became the second president in American History to face impeachment charges. The following document contains the list of the articles of impeachment.. As you review the charges, reflect back on the impeachment articles leveled against Andrew Johnson look for similarities between the two trials and consider the validity of the charges against Clinton.

The presidential election of 2000 between Al Gore and George Bush hinged on the final tally of votes in the state of Florida. One of the issues regarding the counting of the ballots involved the type of voting machines and if they had completely punched through the selection on the ballot (“hanging chads”). The entire process ended up in the Supreme Court and became known as Bush v. Gore 2000 with the court deciding in favor Bush resulting in his victory in the presidential race. The election was also unique as Gore had won the popular vote, but lost the election. As you read about the case consider the many factors the court had to address and if this decision is a mandate for reform of the electoral college.
