Carly Taylor’s article describes what movies can do that books can not. Starting off, film and print are two different medias and should be expected to be able to tell different stories. Hence why movies are often called “adaptations”. The author and director are separate storytellers, telling a story in their own way. A lot of people go in expecting the same thing from the movie as the book and are highly disappointed when their expectations are let down. We fail to see that directors have a different perspective on an authors story.
Usually movies take into account the story as a whole, skipping things such as internal dialogue. Making scenes more pleasurable instead of mundane in a short amount of time. You can see the perspective from the outside. Also, if you were experiencing the events for yourself in real time. It captures the main idea of the plot for the viewers.
Authors and directors are two different types of artists and they produce two separate types of media for the views. Sometimes in a book it is difficult to grasp fully the visual effects that the author is trying to create. Movies help us get a more general feel to this. Take for example the movie adaptation for “Clock Work Orange”. The book has a strange way of describing things such as a mannequin table and all of the slang that is in Russian but the movie is there to put it all into better perspective, with narration and visual aids.
Movies help us understand books better. They are different medias created by different artists. The adaptations of books give us a different perspective on the authors story by speeding along the process of the main idea and events that unfold. Confusing texts from books are turned into more pleasing ways to enjoy the story without as much effort, helping us understand what the story was meant to be about.
