The Mexican War and The California Gold Rush had the most significant impact on westward expansion from 1800-1848 (Open Stax, 2019). The Mexican-American War reconstructed the U.S. and Mexico border. The U.S. expanded south by buying Mexican states and the American Mexican ties grew contentious. In 1945 was the war’s last straw when Polk wanted to buy Texas. Polk started a 1946 war against Mexico because Mexico refused to negotiate. Two years of fighting couldn’t stop the Americans and Mexico received minimal reimbursement after signing the 1848 treaty (Open Stax, 2019). Governing the new states was tough as the country’s area grew swiftly and the new regions had hard-to-eradicate slaves.
The gold rush impacted society. “Forty-niners” deported and attacked natives (referring to 1849, the peak year for Gold Rush immigration). (Open Stax, 2019). Oregon, Hawaii, and Latin America sent settlers in 1848, and half of the 300,000 Gold Rush migrants came by ship. The 49ers had tough trips. Europe, Australia, and China participated. Agriculture and ranching helped settlers plus, San Francisco had 200 residents in 1846 and 36k by 1852 (Open Stax, 2019). California had villages, roads, churches, schools, etc. California was created in 1850 after the new constitution was adopted in 1849. (Open Stax, 2019).
When analyzing Manifest Destiny’s impact on two historical events it was a colonialist belief that American frontiers would expand throughout North America. Manifest Destiny predicted the US might expand into Mexico to the Pacific and in 1848’s Gold Rush began when gold was discovered and despite rumors, millions sought money and power in California.
