Learning Outcome Criteria
1. Analyse stresses and strains in torsion, bending axial loading and combined loading AND ability to apply in the generated innovative design of the component.
2. Understanding of advanced engineering materials and manufacturing processes : Analyse buckling instability for column in axial loads & select materials & appropriate processes
3. Understanding of Manufacturing processes: Select suitable casting and forming processes & non-conventional techniques
Adequate knowledge of Materials, Manufacturing, Mechanical Properties is essential to pursuing a course of study ranging from designing to assessing mechanical properties of components for achieving a viable and value adding outcome.
Title: Prepare an Investigative report of 2000 words calculating applicable Stress, Strain, Buckling or Combined loading on one of the three cases as provided:
a) Combined Loading on an Airplane wing,
b) Stress and Strains on Torsion Suspension Bar in a car,
c) Buckling instability on a Steel Beam on a Civil Structure.
Design the case study to calculate above mechanical properties.
What is the material chosen and why?
What is the manufacturing process for making the structure?
How long will the structure last in service?
Under what conditions will it fail and how is the failure diagnosed?
(1) You are required to design the structure, assess the applicable stresses, strains, buckling or combined loading on the structure due to its application. You must search of the literature and prepare report based on the lectures associated with current studies on material, manufacturing, mechanical properties. The aim is to have deep understanding of application knowledge of materials, manufacturing and calculation of mechanical properties of the designed structure.
In your proposal you would need to;
(a) Design a component for desired application choosing from one of three cases provided
(b) discuss / justify the material used for the application, it’s manufacturing process, it’s service lifetime, circumstances/conditions when material will fail and diagnosis of the failure.
(c) Calculate the applicable: Stress, Strain, Buckling, Combined Loading on the designed component for its intended application
(d) Document all references that support your study: minimum 10 references. Research journal articles will only be accepted. No websites, videos will be accepted.
(e) References, Tables, Diagrams are not included in the word count.
