The introduction and the relevance of the idea of the Phenomenon of Interest in nursing practice has created greater directionality for nurses pursuing higher academic achievements in their profession by providing them the chance to explore important social, health related and cultural issues. Substance use disorder and the impact of the same on mental health has been established through a variety of interdisciplinary studies. Substance use disorder leads to not only negative emotional, physical and psychosocial issues, but it is also correlated with higher degrees of incarceration. Conversely, incarcerated individuals show propensity for substance use disorder after release from prison which in turn has a negative impact on mental health and is also associated with higher recidivism rates. Substance use disorder can lead to mental health issues, leading to incarceration while the prison setting may introduce non abusers to the phenomenon leading to enhanced risk for substance use during and after incarceration. This POI paper seeks to show that substance use disorder, mental health problems and incarceration are connected to one another with each holding the potential to trigger the other and calls for the setting up of treatment facilities and rehabilitative care programs in prisons itself as also provide support for those who leave prison.
