You may choose a topic that is thematic (e.g., war photography, astronomical photography) or monographic (a single photographer, such as Dorothea Lange, Jacob Riis, or Lewis Hine). Be inventive in your choice. Limit the scope of your research to a brief time period within a photographer’s career or to a specific subgenre or to a brief period of the history of photography. This is a 8-10 page paper, not a doctoral dissertation, so be focused.
Create an outline. Begin with a list of questions that you would like to explore and answer for yourself. What are the issues related to your topic? What are the crucial aspects of your topic? What is the highlight of the career of the artist or the artist’s contribution to a genre or to photography or to society? What photographic processes were employed? Do you discern a development of the artist’s career or an evolution of the form?
Make a preliminary list of photographic works you would like to discuss for your paper.
