The goal of a formal analysis is to explain how the formal elements of a work of art affect the representation of the subject matter and expressive
content. The emphasis shiuld be on analyzing the formal elements first then interpreting the artwork.
Writing a proper Formal Analysis takes time. It first starts with looking at the individual artwork for a long period of time then using the Elements
of Art and Principles of Organization to identify the subject and form of the work. It can be difficult to translate the visual language of the artist
into textual language, but that is always the goal when viewing art. Practicing critical thinking skills and using our own subjectivity is a great way
to “peel back the layers” of the piece.
