Two Literacy Focused Lesson Plans
a. Design two literacy lesson plans.
i. One lesson plan focused on writing.
ii. One lesson plan focused on reading.
b. Focus each plan around the text analyzed in the critical analysis.-
c. Each plan should address one standard from the New Jersey Learning Standards
for English Language Arts.
d. Each plan should have one student-centered objective that is aligned to the
standard.
e. Address the plan to a small group of students.
f. Each plan should have a central focus.
g. Each should address one language demand such as language function, vocabulary,
discourse, or syntax.
i. Language function is the purpose of the language task in the lesson plan.
Such as the student needs to describe, explain, speak, argue, write,
compare and contrast, recount, negate, justify, or perform.
ii. Vocabulary is the set of new words related to the tasks involved in the
lesson. These may vary widely but could include content-specific words,
such as climate or precipitation, or words related to the reading of a
picture book or novel, such as perspective, character, event, plot, or
conclusion.
iii. Discourse is how people must talk or write in a certain genre of writing or
speech. For example, the student may write a persuasive letter to the
newspaper, create a class magazine, or write a poem for a community
event while also analyzing how to do these appropriately.

iv. Syntax is the structure of language. For example, this may include the

students focus on writing a simple or complex sentence, a paragraph,
dialogue, or using sequencing words.
h. Each plan should have detailed steps in the instructional tasks, following the
Gradual Release of Responsibility:
i. Focus Lesson
ii. Guided Instruction
iii. Collaborative Work
iv. Independent Work

i. Address how the objective will be assessed.
