As of 2022, health care expenditures in the United States were near 19.7% of the U.S gross domestic product (GDP), with a major portion of Medicare funding going toward chronic illness and care at the last 6 months of life. For this assignment, learners will evaluate the effect that chronic diseases, specific to the aging population, have on health care.

Directions:
Refer to “Chronic Conditions,” located in the topic Resources, to select one of the 21 chronic health conditions as identified by Medicare to affect older individuals. Download and analyze the most recent year of “Prevalence State/County Level: All Beneficiaries by Age” and research the “Beneficiaries 65 Years and Over” data for your county and state pertaining to the issue you selected.
Based on your analysis, write a paper (1,000-1,250 words) that evaluates the effect a chronic disease specific to older individuals has on the health care system. Include the following:
Describe the health issue that occurs in older individuals that you have selected.
Based on the analysis of the health issue you selected, explain how this issue affects the health care system as well as the patient. Consider cost, resources, and insurance companies.
Develop a search strategy to find literature related to the selected health issue to determine what is currently used to treat the issue. Based on the evaluation of the literature you selected, discuss the potential resolutions and the ensuing effect that the treatment has on the health care system in terms of cost and resources.
Discuss the ethical dilemma of managing a chronic disease when a suggested treatment plan is not followed by the patient. Consider how socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural norms influence the patient as you assess the ethical dilemma.
Discuss any policies (local, state, or federal) that attempt to help manage the chronic disease and associated costs.
Discuss the barriers to implementation for the solution proposed in the policy.
Based on what you have discovered in the literature you evaluated, propose your own recommendation as a DNP-prepared nurse to reduce expenditures, while continuing to provide health care measures for older individuals with the selected disease. Be sure to consider Christian and ethical principles in the development of your proposal.
As a future DNP-prepared nurse, explain how you are able to impact policy and funding for this population
