1. DDT is a very effective insecticide. It kills mosquitoes and other disease-carrying pests by binding to and opening sodium ion channels in neurons (brain cells). Without the ability to control sodium, the cells cannot function properly and the pest dies. DDT has been banned in the US because it can also affect larger animals, including humans. Even so, DDT is still used fairly frequently in developing countries where mosquito-borne disease is common. Should developed countries like the US step in to stop developing countries from using DDT? Why or why not?
2. Now that you have learned about the ETC, there’s actually many drugs and chemicals that target the ETC to either kill or treat. In addition, there’s also many food supplements that claim to affect mitochondrial performance. Please list one of such chemical, drug or food supplements you found along with how it works to accomplish its goal. How might this knowledge affect your daily life decision?
