Econ 244

Assessment
Imagine that you have been invited to make a presentation to a class of first year Queen’s
Students taking Economics 110. The topic is your chosen specialization – Housing and Infrastructure, Education and
Employment, Environment and Natural Resources, or Business Development. Within those
categories, you can specialize further; for example, if your specialty is Environment and Natural
Resources, you can specialize in Forestry. Only, do not make your specialty so narrow that
you do not have a lot of content to share. Our focus for this entire assessment is ONLY Environment and Natural Resources. Need 1000+ words speech. Please also give an outline after finished. Need 6+ academic sources. Please write this speech as the STEPS shown below. I provided only one reading that must cite. Thank you. FORMAT:
This 10-15 minute presentation is to be enacted by you and recorded as an .mp4. You can
film yourself giving a speech or you can video-record yourself over a Power Point presentation.
I would like to see your face, at least at the beginning, so I can verify that it is you making the
presentation. This .mp4 presentation will be deleted after twelve months, unless the professor
has received your permission to retain the video for instructional purposes. DO NOT READ FROM THE TEXTBOOK OR ANY OTHER PUBLICATION. Put everything in
your own words. No quotations.
If doing a Powerpoint, put image sources on the last slide of your presentation. STEPS:
1) When you start filming, before you begin your presentation, film a close-up of yourself
holding your student card close to your face for at least four seconds. 2) Begin your presentation with a custom Land Acknowledgement appropriate to
Kingston. Include a few sentences about the Indigenous history of this area. Resources:  https://www.queensu.ca/indigenous/land-acknowledgement  https://nativegov.org/a-guide-to-indigenous-land-acknowledgment/
The Land Acknowledgement should be less than one minute long. Try to make it
original and a bit personal – include stuff that made an impression on you as you studied
Econ 244. Don’t give me the Queens one or the Isabel Bader one etc. etc. 3) Pre-contact economics. Describe traditional Indigenous practices and cultural norms
relating to your topic of specialization. 4) Post-contact history. Describe the impact of colonization from the point of contact up
to the present time on Indigenous communities, in reference to your chosen
specialization. Consider the period of time before the Indian Act, and during the Indian
Act up to the 1970s, and in more recent decades. 5) With respect to your chosen specialization, summarize the situation today. What are
the main issues today? Which laws have relevance? What other factors are at play?
Distinguish between urban Indigenous communities, reserve communities, northern
Indigenous communities, and self-governing Indigenous communities. 6) Suggest strategies to empower Indigenous communities to improve outcomes with
respect to your chosen specialization. End on a hopeful note. RUBRIC A level features B-C level features D-F level features
