Evaluate a piece of art.
Choose a piece of art from an online museum and, using a combintion of the Viewer Response method and the ‘See, Think, Wonder” method, analyze it for three things.
Choose a contemporary piece. Something that has been created within the last five years will suffice. Nothing older will be accepted for grading.
1.Describe: describe your selected piece of art using the elements and principles you have learned in this unit. Describing art is telling what you see, visually, not what you think it means. That comes next. Explain what elements the piece is made of. There will be primary elements and secondary elements. For example, if you are describing a Jack Kirby comic book illustration, the element of “line” would be a major part of that art. Most art has multiple elements. It will also contain various principles used to construct it. Tell me what they are.
2. Interpret: what do you think the art piece means, and why do you think that? You can again use the elements and principles to help you explain your response.
3. Finally, I want you to make a judgement call about the piece you have selected. is it good or not? Why do you feel that way?
Submit as a .doc or .docx and include a pic of the art you are evaluating.
Your submission must be a minimum of 300 words and written in MLA style essay format. Do not submit one long paragraph. This submission will have at least five paragraphs consisting of an introduction, one paragraph each for the three things you are going to say about your artwork, and a concluding paragraph.
Also, there must be a pic attached to the assignment in order to receive full credit.
DO NOT use any sources for this assignment. The work must be 100% original. It will be submitted to Safeassign to check for plagiarism. Any plagiarism will result in a grade of zero.
I recommend using Brainfuse to help with editing your work prior to submission. More information on Brainfuse can be found inthe Syllabus Addendum.
Tip: It’s okay to look at and read criticism online. That’s how we learn to do things, by imitation. But be very careful to not paste anyone’s words that are not your own into this response. That is plagiarism.
The role of evaluation is discussed in this chapter of in terms of questions: What makes a work of art worthwhile? Is it visually interesting? Is it moving? Is it skillfully done? Which criteria are relevant to judging art, and who is qualified to make such judgments?
