PERFORMANCE REVIEW ASSIGNMENT – EDITED FOR ONLINE CLASSES SPRING 2022-4-8(5).docx PERFORMANCE REVIEW ASSIGNMENT – EDITED FOR ONLINE CLASSES SPRING 2022-4-8(5).docx – Alternative Formats
Attend a live professional concert of music related to the class and approved by your instructor. Your required concert should be a professional one by organizations such as the Dallas Symphony, Irving Symphony or other groups listed on our eCAMPUS Musical Organizations links page. Sorry, but a concert of “pop” music will not count for this assignment. (Contact your instructor for approval of substitute concerts not listed on our course links page).
Dallas Symphony Orchestra Web Page: Low-priced Stand-by tickets are available at the box office for almost every concert. To purchase a stand-by ticket, arrive at least one half hour before start time and purchase the ticket at the lower-level boxoffice. The ushers will seat you on a “seats available” basis a few minutes before the downbeat of the concert.

The Required Report/Review
Write a 400-600 word report and e-mail it to me using the link provided under the assignments tab. The report should detail your impression of the music performed, the performing organization, and your reaction to the overall experience. Do not copy information directly from the program notes…use your own words. Send in your report as soon after the event as possible while your impressions are fresh in mind.
100 points total possible
Your paper should include the information listed below with your name, class title, day, time, and section number identified at the top.
Name the performing organization, date of the concert, and the name of the conductor. Mention composer and title of the compositions you heard performed.
Tell about the composers: Name, dates, style, and a few historic facts about each one.
Say something descriptive about each composition on the program. Go into detail describing at least one or two of them: Describe anything special about the quality of melody, rhythm, and accompaniment or background.
Include a description of the instrumentation.
Were there outstanding soloists in any of the compositions?
Include observations on volume, tempo and texture.
How do the elements change to create different moods? What emotion was communicated by the music?
What did you think of the conductor?
End your review with a description of what you enjoyed the most about the experience? The least? Was the audience enthusiastic about the performance or just luke-warm? Did you feel you were dressed correctly to “fit in” with the audience? How did this performance differ from a popular music concert?
Hints on How To Get Started Writing a Concert Review/Report.
Describe the sound of the music you heard using musical terminology studied in class. Was it a Symphony? Tone poem? The program will give you an introduction to the music.
Think of broad opposites to start such as: was there a great deal of contrast from loud to soft? From high to low? Large groups of instruments to small? Was there an outstanding soloist? Did the ensemble play music by any composer’s we have studied in the online class?
Go from the general to the specific. Focus on a few things that interested you and go into detail. Did the performers seem to be “into the music”? (Believe it or not, professional musicians can get bored playing the same repertoire year-after-year). Was the audiences response to the performance enthusiastic or lukewarm? Were people friendly?
Teacher’s Advice
Don’t use words you read in the program notes, I want to hear your own impressions in your own language. There are no points deducted because you aren’t a professional journalist. The points you are awarded on this assignment depend on how well you write about your experience without copying material written by anyone else.
