I wanted to research narcissistic mothers and the relationship with their daughters because it pertains to my writing but not something I have implemented yet. This is something I have never done research on because the discovery is still very new to me.

They can suffer from very low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, a need to feel constantly loved from those around them, it could affect the relationships with their partners, and are always trying to please others. This could also go in a way of, they grow up with the same traits as their mother because that is all they have learned to know. No respect for others, gaslighting, playing victim, abusive behavior such as neglect to their partners or children, insecure attachments, etc.

Now there are a few different types of narcissistic personalities, two of them could be, one sees their daughters as themselves and can be hard on them and not be motherly because they want them to be the best, but they will never be good enough in their eyes. Another form could be when they have a favorite child, and another child is labeled as the black sheep. I think in this case, they take all of those behaviors as listed above, plus the other child’s success and dump it onto the “other child” which feels so much worse.

She used her research mainly based off perspectives from the daughters because they are the ones affected and most of the time the mothers never see their actions as wrong. As the title states, “Apples From the Dessert” I strongly believe that it represents a child that is growing, the world is their oyster, but they are growing in an environment that is not helping them strive. At least, that is how I wanted to see it. I am so glad I came across the article because it deeply described much of what I have went through and I never had full confirmation until now. I will definitely use her story to help with my writing. 

I have not used much of Google Scholar, but it was extremely helpful with trusted, cited work. Rather than using a regular search engine and most of them are usually not credible. I know I am receiving great information, and it is user friendly. I will use this feature more often moving forward. The only downside was many articles I tried to read were not accessible due to having to pay money for them. I can see how that would easily steer a user away.

The changes in the performance management system have led to several positive results.             As we age, we go through various memory and cognitive changes. The thought of changes in memory and cognitive abilities may seem off-putting at first, but this is a normal part of aging.  Most of these changes are normal, although there are some abnormal changes as well. Healthy habits can help preserve and improve memory and cognitive abilities, helping to ensure normal changes. 

            Whether memory changes affect daily functioning is how to separate normal from abnormal memory aging (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). Different diseases, such as dementia, and other factors such as severe depression and traumatic brain injuries, can impair memory and daily functioning, known as abnormal memory aging (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). Normal memory aging does not affect daily functioning as abnormal aging.

            There is evidence that working memory, an umbrella term for many short-term holding and computational processes relating to a vast range of cognitive skills and knowledge demands, declines as we age, although the extent of the working memory decline is in doubt (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). However, just like training a muscle, memory can be trained to remain fit. For example, by repeating something over and over, known as rehearsal, we are able to keep the information in working memory (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019).

            There are also various memory aids used to improve memory. Eternal aids, memory aids that rely on environmental resources such as notebooks, and internal aids, memory aids that rely on mental processes such as imagery, can be used to improve both explicit and implicit memory (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). Learning new skills, exercise, and avoiding the application of memory stereotypes are also factors that improve and preserve memory as we age (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019).

            Much like memory, cognitive ability is preserved and/or improved as we age by repetition or acquiring knowledge through life experience and education, known as crystallized intelligence (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). Crystallized intelligence does not normally decline with age, but rather increases until late in life (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). This is why older people are considered wise, not because of their age, but because their crystallized intelligence has made them experts over time through education and life experience over many years (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019).

            This is also supported in Scripture, “Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Job 12:12). Also, the book of Proverbs says, “The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Proverbs 20:29). This is because gray hair is like a crown of glory gained from living a righteous life (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Proverbs 16:31). Therefore, do not be afraid of aging. Keep your memory sharp, learn new skills, and share your wisdom with the world.

These could be helpful to help the patient, or their family get all the information prior to the visit also it maybe helpful to fill one out and just keep a copy if the patient can’t communicate or has memory problems. Your research should ideally progress in three stages:
⦁ Preliminary research
⦁ Before visiting each virtual site, complete some preliminary research on the religious tradition. What is the history of the particular religious sites you have chosen? Which denomination/sect, if any, subscribes to the importance of these religious sites? This will help contextualize some of the ceremonies/services you will experience.
⦁ Field research
⦁ Virtually visit each of the sites and observe closely. Takes notes on what you observe at each virtual site (e.g. rituals, practitioners’ expressions, social interactions, religious art, symbols, architecture, etc.)
⦁ Supplementary research
⦁ After your visit, research any elements of the experience that were unfamiliar and that left you with questions, including but not limited to the practices, symbols, and architecture. In other words, research each element and find out why it’s important within this particular tradition.
Examples:
⦁ If you observe men wearing kippahs (or yarmulkes) at a Jewish service, you don’t want to write in your essay, “There were these men, and they were wearing these funny hats but I don’t know why.” This is where your additional research comes in. Find out what the hats are called and find out why they’re worn.
⦁ If you observe worshipers washing their hands and feet at a Mosque, you don’t want to write in your essay, “Everyone was washing their hands and feet, but I don’t know why they did that and it was pretty weird.”
Upon completing these three stages, write a detailed and insightful essay that demonstrates a general understanding of the importance of each of the sites within its religious tradition. Then compare and contrast the three sites and the rituals associated with them. Do you think they are more similar or more different?
Finally, include your personal reaction to the virtual visits and what you discovered. How did you respond? Did you enjoy the visit or did you see anything that made you uncomfortable? Were your opinions about the religion challenged or confirmed by the site visit?

When the temperature dipped below 40, iguanas started falling from the trees. Small, sleek green iguanas; big iguanas as long as four feet from snout to tail, scales cresting gloriously from their heads; orange-and-green iguanas, their muscled, goose-pimpled arms resolving into sharp claws. Iguanas were everywhere: in the bushy areas surrounding canals, on sidewalks, in backyards, lying helpless among the fallen, rotting fruit of mango and orange trees.

The iguanas lay on the ground as if they were dead, a rhapsody of corpses dotting the landscape like musical notation. But they weren’t dead — not at first, anyway. They had lapsed into a sort of hibernation in response to the cold. If it warmed up fast enough, they would awaken from their deep slumbers and climb back onto their perches in trees or return to sunning themselves on rocks and the hot metal encasements of electrical boxes.

Cold snaps do sometimes occur in South Florida, but they usually pass within 48 hours. This time, the frigid temperatures lingered for days, and the iguanas remained motionless where they lay.

On the third day of the iguana plague, my husband, John, arrived home carrying a cardboard box. Inside was a large green iguana, slender and peaceful, lying on its back.

“What?” I said.

“I think it’s still alive,” he said.

I followed him to the bathroom. He placed the box inside the tub and edged past me toward the hallway.

“Where are you going?”

He didn’t answer but returned a minute later wearing yellow rubber gloves and carrying a stethoscope in his hands, the cheap one he used when he was in nursing school. He perched on the edge of the bathtub, stuck the rubber buds in his ears and carefully lifted the iguana out of the box. Its limp, lean arms looked strangely graceful. Balancing its body with one hand, John placed the flat circular end of the stethoscope against the reptile’s chest.

“I should get my camera,” I said. “Do you know how crazy this looks?”

“I’m checking for a heartbeat,” he said.

I was quiet for a few moments, then said: “Well? Did you find one?”

“Shh.” John stared at a space on the green tiled wall, face crimped in concentration. Then he frowned. “Maybe the stethoscope isn’t strong enough. Iguanas have really thick skin.”

“How about some chest compressions? Maybe a little mouth to mouth?”

He gave me a withering look as he gently returned the iguana to its cardboard cradle. He pulled the stethoscope out of his ears.

“Can you get a towel?” he said. “I want to keep him warm.”

I went to the closet and chose an old green towel that was badly pilled and fraying at the edges. I handed it to John.

“Let’s just wait until the morning,” he said. “Maybe he’ll come out of it.”

I peered down at the iguana. It did look as if it was sleeping. Maybe John was right. Maybe it was still alive, and it just took a while to thaw out of its hibernation. Its hands looked almost human, only they were green and slender and elongated, with sharp talons on the ends. I fought the insane impulse to reach out and grab its fingers, imagining it would squeeze back, like a newborn infant.

John laid the towel over the iguana, as if tucking it into bed.

We rose early the next morning. John put his ear to the closed bathroom door to listen for movement. Hearing nothing, he slowly opened it. I flinched, picturing the iguana lunging toward us, claws bared, ready to shred our skin like Cheddar. But nothing stirred. Together we tiptoed toward the tub and peered inside the box. The iguana was still immobile, and its skin was pale, almost gray instead of green. The thing was dead. It was definitely dead.

John bent down and lifted the iguana’s cardboard coffin. Still in my pajamas, I slipped on a pair of shoes and opened the front door. Our funeral procession to the Dumpster was short and somber. I held the lid open, and John dropped in the box. The thud reverberated inside the steel tomb.

We stared at the Dumpster for a few moments. “I thought I could save it,” John said.

Regret etched lines around his eyes. I grabbed his hand and squeezed.

“Sugar,” I said, using our pet name for each other. “Some things are just beyond saving.”

Though Wanda discouraged the children from leaving their toys at day care overnight, toys were left frequently, even Karen’s dolls.
One morning, after Karen had missed two days of day care, Wanda received a phone message from Sheila indicating that she was going to have to withdraw Karen. In her message, Sheila explained that she was quitting her job so that she could stay home with Karen. Wanda was concerned because Sheila had still not paid for the two and a half weeks that she cared for Karen. Sheila also stated that she would send Wanda a check in the mail, but that she planned to stop by in the evening to pick up Karen’s dolls. When Wanda mentioned the situation to her husband, he became angry and suggested to Wanda that they keep Karen’s dolls until Sheila pays for the day care services.

Before you write your essay, consider the following definitions and research findings:

Police discretion is the flexibility police officers have in deciding between multiple courses of action to resolve a situation in the course of performing their duties. Research identifies several factors that determine whether law enforcement officers decide to enforce or not enforce laws: (1) the officer’s personal feelings regarding the severity of an offense and the potential risk it poses to the public; (2) the specifics of a situation; and (3) supervisor expectations of how officers will carry out their job functions (Ishoy, 2016). Other studies find that if an offender is a resident in the community where the offense occurs, an officer is 18% less likely to arrest the offender, especially if the offender is under the age of 21 or over the age of 51 (McCamman & Mowen, 2017).

Use of force is the amount of police effort necessary to get a resistant suspect to comply. Below read the case Graham v. Connor (1989). The United States Supreme Court determined that the Fourth Amendment’s objective reasonableness standard should be the measure used in alleged excessive use of force cases.

All claims that law enforcement officials have used excessive force – deadly or not – in the course of an arrest, investigatory stop, or other “seizure” of a free citizen are properly analyzed under the Fourth Amendment’s “objective reasonableness” standard, rather than under a substantive due process standard.

Points of interest from this case:

a.      If use of force is being questioned, it has to be based on a specific constitutional right infringement.  You have to judge this claim of constitutional right infringement by the specific constitutional standard which governs that right. What specific constitutional right is being infringed upon?

b.     Claims that law enforcement officials have used excessive force in the course of an arrest, investigatory stop, or other “seizure” of a free citizen are most properly characterized as invoking the protections of the Fourth Amendment, which guarantees citizens the right “to be secure in their persons . . . against unreasonable seizures,” and must be judged by reference to the Fourth Amendment’s “reasonableness” standard.

c.      The Fourth Amendment must be the guide to judge law enforcement excessive force incidents in the course of an arrest, investigatory stop, or other “seizure” of a free citizen.

De-escalation is when officers reduce the intensity of a potentially violent situation. It is the actions of the suspect (their level of cooperation or resistance) that impacts the discretionary powers of the police in deciding how to de-escalate the situation, if possible.

Based on the above information, respond to the following questions and instructions:

When reflecting on Body Camera Footage 1 and Body Camera Footage 2, consider the amount of police effort used to get each suspect to comply. Explain why the amount of force used by the officers in each incident was either reasonable or excessive. 
Consider how the discretionary powers of the police can be beneficial to citizens from a biblical worldview.

Apply Kotter’s Change model to your life. This is the first part of your Personal Change Project.

Each student will post about their proposed change. In this step, students will describe the change and explain Why is it important to you? (Purpose), What will be different? (Outcomes), and How they can change and influence the context and build coalitions to reach the goal (Process). Remember that this is the change that you want to monitor for the next four weeks. Students will apply the first 2 steps of Kotter’s 8-step change model. The grading in this week is counted towards the discussion forum (20 points for post, 5 points for peer reply). Aim for content between 350-500 words in your initial post.

1. Describe the change you want to make: What is the change, how does your plan look like to translate the desired change to action, and what do you want the outcome to be?

2. Then use step 1 and 2 of Kotter’s 8-step change model and apply them to your change. Furthermore, any information from the readings that you think may be helpful to manage change is good to link to your personal change.

For example: Step 1 Sense of Urgency: If your overall goal is to have an exercise routine within the next four weeks, your argumentation could be: “My motivation to get fitter is to be able to carry by baby around without getting to exhausted / to build a strong core and prevent back pain and thus lower any medical bills in the future”. Lastly, also explain what would happen if you would not create a sense of urgency.

Step 2 Build powerful coalitions: Think about how can you transfer this concept from the organizational context to your life? Who are the buy-ins? Who can be your ally? Your children? Your partner (maybe if your goal is to lose weight, they need to stop having cake in the house)? Or is it solely you? You may want to explain other ways you can build powerful coalitions – ways that give you accountability: create a blog and document it? Who can you enlist to be on your team? Who is the right person to help and who can demonstrate teamwork? For example, someone who has undergone such transformation? Someone who has undergone such a process and can help you? A coach? Who is someone you can trust? Who could be someone who can be your cheerleader? Think outside the box ????. Lastly, also explain what would happen if you would not have your coalitions to make the change.

3. Reply to at least one peer on their planned change and a) motivate them, and b) give them at least one suggestion that they have not mentioned in their post that can help them to succeed in their change.

 These three concepts all roll into Retirement planning.  I have a different perspective of planning for my retirement and I feel more empowered with the knowledge of how to make my money grow.  I have tools now (PV/FV/Payback period) that will help me with financial decisions  which impact my retirement planning goals.  Meaning, if I want to buy a new car, payoff my mortgage sooner or consolidate my debts into one payment, I know how to shop around and make a better financial decision.  I feel more empowered when I review stocks and bonds and don’t feel so intimidated when I review my 401(k) plan because I have a better understanding of risks, PV and FV, sometimes a small loss today doesn’t mean I can’t have a larger gain tomorrow; even though a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow ????.  I’m more comfortable with taking risks now for a bigger reward in the future.  As such, I plan on investing outside of my 401(k) plan next year and the knowledge that I have about Beta will aid me when I start investing.
