In Federalist 51, James Madison argues that the United States Constitution provides a “double security” to protect individual rights and liberties. The powers that the people have surrendered to government are “divided between two distinct governments (state and national) and then the portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments.” In an essay, describe at least three of these Madisonian structures to divide governmental powers in the U.S. Constitution and explain how these structures that you have described reduce the overall powers of government in the United States.
